Hi, we are planning a visit to Mallorca and chartering a boat from Palma. Appreciate a bit of help on a few things:

1. Anchorages: looking at the pilot book we have so far shortlisted Cala Portals in the west and possibly Cala Pi in the east. Does anyone have any better suggestion?

2. Do marinas over there operate on "short-stay" concept? or daily fee as a minimum? if so, can we just call them on VHF and stop by?

any other suggestions or advice is much appreciated.

Let us know the size of boat and trip duration and then routes etc can be suggested.

Portals vels very nice but crowded in season. I was there yesterday. Packed in like sardines as most popular Palma anchorage.

Cala pi is very narrow and only suitable for about 6 boats and best you are not to long. As you come out of the Cala it is very deep so being more seaward does not help

You can stay by the day yes. Many marinas will not take bookings for a day only longer periods so you ask on the day. It is generally not a problem but you may need to have other options to call at busy times. Andraxt take bookings.

What time of year will you be there?

Portals vells (aka cala portals) is v busy especially on a weekend.

Bendinat/illetas is worth a visit.

Going past cala figuera, you have el Toro/port Adriano, santa ponsa, pageura, cala fornells, camp de mar, cala llamp, port andratx, dragonets. All are worth a visit.

Definitely worth a visit is Cabrera.

Ok given the size I assume when you say short stay you mean hours not days.

You would generally anchor and swim into the beach which would be nicer than a marina.

The only possible destination marina would be portals. It is very expensive.

If you fancy lunch there I would just go in and see where the tenders are tied up or motor to the end of the pontoon near the restaurants and make sure is it in sight from your table if you need to move it.

Thanks, I’ll be hiring a 8m rib, so low beam and low draft.

With an 8m rib I’d probably head for illetas every day, have some swims, some sitting on the beach, and drinks and food from the cafe, or the nearby hotel/s.

I spent a week anchored there in July 2007... it was wonderful!
