Hi there folks
I wonder whether anybody could help me with this even though I have left it a bit late.
I am helping to deliver a boat (gibsea 304) with the owner skipper from Gib to Palma Mallorca at the end of this week (I only found out for definate yesterday). The deliverly will take two weeks and does anybody know what insurence I need (eg will standard holiday insurence do?), which are the best companies to go with? and do I need specialist boaty insurence? (my parents are non boaty and getting in a flap about personal liability insurence incase I was to ram somebody not that I intend to).
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Cheers Pip

As the owner is aboard and is the skipper, it is his responsibility, and damage casued by his yacht even if you're steering is down to him, so covered by his boat insurance. Your medical insurance would need to be travel insurance that allowed you to sail. Policy details vary quite a bit, most only exclude offshore yacht racing as a sport, but some put a limit on days at sea. Maybe check with a charter company they will know insurance companise that cover you whilst on short sailing hols.

If it is his boat then he should have insurance, at least 3rd party, before you set off.

If you really are just crewing then the responsibility is his, but if he is inexperienced and relying upon your skill and expertise then you might well need insurance, and in that position should reconsider!

The one area you must certainly deal for yourself is personal insurance, health/injury, even if you did later have a claim agaisnt your skipper!

IMHO all aspects of marine insurance are the owner/skipper's problem, as most people above have said.

As regards personal insurance, my annual travel insurance - ordinary "holiday" insurance - covers sailing but specifically excludes sailing from one country to another. I don't think there's any standard answer to this - you need to check the exact wording of any policy you have or consider.

Pantaneaus offer sailing cover for crew which will be ideal for what it is you are doing. You don't need and indeed cannot obtain personal liability insurance but the skippers standard policy cover should include these areas.

I am not sure why you need insurance at all other than to cover cancellation or loss or theft.

If you get injured the yachts insurance should cover you.
