Hello. New here. I have a new Garmin 1243 xfv on sea hunt 245. I love the auto nav feature. But when going to a way point from a different location it wants me to go back home and follow that route. It doesn't seem to reroute like a nav in my car would do. Any advice on how this works? Thanks. Pete

Couple of work rounds if you can’t figure out to reset the XTE, I can’t remember how to do it I’m afraid.

1. Update the active route with a new additional waypoint immediately in front of where you are, say 100 meters away, Boat will go to that first when you restart then head to the next waypoint. Or, 2, cancel route altogether, select then go to your next waypoint, then restart your preferred route from there.

Not sure that i understand your issue, i don't get the "go back home" ?

Are you saying that if you have deviated from the route and you want to restart "auto route" you will be steered back to the route, then follow it ?

If not, some more detail on the issue would be helpful.

That’s my experience, not Garmin specific, if you don’t reset or zero out the cross track error before restarting the route. Say you’ve deviated for whatever reason by ½ a mile, the AP takes the shortest route back to the original track, ie 1/2 a mile perpendicular to that sector; then restarts having gotten back on to the track. Rather than heading from where you are to waypoint, which could of course be dangerous if there’s a hazard in the way.

My last-but-two boat had Garmin and I never got the hang of how to reset the XTE. Raymarine click or press Menu / navigation / reset XTE.

Thought that was the issue, thanks for clarifying. I've got similar plotters to the OP, my main one is the 1223 xsv and that's obviously what it does. I'll sometimes deviate from the pre-plotted route, perhaps the height of tide allows for a short cut, then you want to get back on the route. I just look ahead to where i want to rejoin the route, tap the screen and press Goto. Once i arrive at that point i restart the route.

@PaulRainbow is that the only / best option with Garmin?
Seems like the best option to me Graham. I'm not aware of a "restart XTE" option on my plotters. If you want to resume the route the system has no way of knowing what's ahead of you, you may have deviated from the course to avoid another vessel, for instance, in which case, automatically plotting a course to the next waypoint might not be safe, or there might be shallow water, or an obstruction between me and the next waypoint.

I just look at the chart and see where i think the best place to rejoin the route is, tap the screen and select "Goto" from the popup options. Once i reach that point i restart the route.

Thanks for the comments. And yes you understand the issue. As a concrete example of what happened to me: from my home port on the Waccamaw river I have a waypoint I use frequently at Georgetown SC harbor. The other day I was not following any auto route and on an adjacent river, nearing Winyah bay, approaching a bridge I've never been under. So to be careful, I put in my trusty waypoint of Georgetown harbor, which was only a few miles ahead. But the auto route directed me back up river in attempt to follow the original route. I didn't follow it of course and was able to follow other boats under the bridge. The point being the auto route to a waypoint should have no memory of the past. It should figure out a new safe path to my waypoint from my current location. From your posts I see this involves "XTE". You might think an expensive nav system might perform like the free Google Maps. Thanks again. I'll figure it out. Ill ask the boat salesman (young guy who was in the coast guard) who seemed to be able to operate it in his sleep what's up.

Sounds like you may have had an active route. To prevent this select Menu > Navigation Options > Stop Navigation. If you just want to go to a waypoint (or a particular spot on the chart) you can tap it on the screen, then choose "Goto". Again, if you want to cancel that, select Menu > Navigation Options > Stop Navigation
