Hi, I’m a final year BA Transport Design student at the University of Huddersfield. For my Final Major Project, I’m going to do some sort of marine/sea/water based vehicle and I am trying to find out various peoples opinions and ideas on which direction to go in.

Preferably, I’m trying to find new markets or just something new and interesting to do. If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. It doesn’t matter how crazy they are, in fact the crazier the better!

Thanks.

What you really need to design is a boat that is capable of entertaining 100 people on board in luxury, does 70knts in any conditions, at one litre per hundred miles, optionally has a mast for the odd sail, and collapses to 5 metres when berthed at a marina so the mooring costs are cheap. Shouldn't cost more than £10,000. If it was amphibious, and could do say 130ish on the roads, that would be a big plus

I like all of Brendan's suggestions and endorse them fully. However, so as not to make like too difficult for a first time designer, how about looking the propulsion method??

Why not look into the viability of Hydrogen Fuel Cells as a form of motive power. All the major car manufacturers are doing this - why not boats?? I would suggest that Hydrogen storage would be easier in a boat, maybe the motor would be easier to marinise? The eco reasons are easy to see. Can the motor be adapted to a drive leg or indeed shafts for larger boats?

Tha car manufacturers leading this are Ford, Toyota, and Chrysler / Daimler...there's your starter for 10.

A QuadSki

How about a cross beteen a quad bike and a jet ski!!! A truly all terrain vehicle for rescue services etc etc

How about a deck of PV cells, charging batteries which power a turbine engine.

Lightweight hull made of wood (sustainable, biodegradable).

With advanced, fully integrated electronic systems.

How about a tender that can be stored on the smallest boat, yet can hold 4 people, deploys quickly, that rows well, that can plane easily and has the option to convert into a sailing dinghy so the kids can mess about?

And costs under £1,200

Brilliant idea (maybe)

Aha, 'uddersfield. Send my regards to the M62.

There is only limited mileage in designing a stupid leisure machine. This won't get a very high grade as it is all a bit too right wing - all the lecherers will likely read the guardian, watch repeats of last of the summer wine and dream of retiring to Holmfirth. So you need something with lefty overtones, and Doing Good.

Worldwide, there's been a load of forest fires recently. Oz, California and southern France, and these have been made worse with on-shore winds. So what about a massive ship with gigantic sea-pumping capabilities, able to razz water half a miles into the air any maybe even a few miles inland and put the fires out? Needs a bit of calculation to find a pump (answer: a bloody big one, possibly several) and a very big diesel engine (or two) to drive it. Nice simple engineering calcs, web-searching to be done, commercial application cos all the govts wil just HAVE to call it in else there'll be a public riot, it's topical, original PLUS all-important lefty environment-saving overtones so should guarantee a high mark.

I like Wakeup's idea cross between quad and jet ski is not only feasable but would also be damn cool.

Good luck with whatever project you do

Re: Ocean-capable lilo

The AK47 is always referred to as a great weapon, yet often (usually) in illegal hands. So how about adressing the needs of the slightly (or very) illegal boater, who attempts to cross sea borders or large rivers? A rucsacable decent lilo would be very popular I reckon, coloured black or grey, big sponsons either side praps with a bit of a bow, grabhandles inside and flipper powered. Proably two-person jobbies, excellent commando/military application, no hard engine calcs, just a nice pic needed and total weight calc. Really, we all know that the albanians will buy them by the thousand. With a decent design, get a governmenty grant, and if it goes well you'll make a fortune. If it goes badly, sell the story to the tabloids and Tblair will have to resign with embarrassment of funding the things that let in all the naughty illegal immigrants.

heres a crazy idea stop typing in boat forum into google search, signing in and getting people on the forum to do your work whilst your out drinking and having fun with girls!!! (insert smiley face )ah the student life.

good luck with the project.

Re: A QuadSki

Could be, although you'll find that a hover craft won't go up steep inclines or over very big bumps. HC not very efficient either.

Re: A QuadSki

And now it's in the public domain no one can patent it, so everyone free to go and build one /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: A QuadSki

quad bike, jet ski, and skidoo. just in case it snows or the sea freezes over.

and a bar, self scrubbing so no antifouling, dirt resistant and untearable canvas where fitted, and finally with voice recogniton navigation and com's equipment
