Quick help needed pls. I am away from the boat, a benny first 325 of 1989 vintage.

The engine is a standard penta 2003.

I need to know what the standard alternator model number is.

I believe it is a Valei / Paris Rhone.

Have tried google but i cannot seem to pin it down - can anyone help please?

Valeo - but any short alternator will probably fit - buy one from the local car breakers.

Thanks Charles - but is therw a specific model number ?

Probably about 40/50 depending on which manufacturers' range you're looking at.

I personally don't have any idea and would never consider buying a replacement alternator from Volvo - it'll cost £350-400 for something that I bought new for €49.
If you must have the part # read it off your existing alternator.

Give Keypart a ring 01923 276000

14V/60A Alternator Assembly P/N 873770 (not sure if thats keyparts part number or the Volvo Number, it fits a range of VP engines)

Hope it helps.

As per the OP, not at boat at the moment :)

I bought a new alternator for my VP 2003 earlier this year from Phoenix electrical - listed on eBay - he knows the volvo engines well and the non branded replacement was an exact fit, worked fine all season. Worth a try? No link other than satisfied customer. His name is Ray wild, 07900 265426, raywild@gmail.com

CR I'm on the boat but cannot see any model number, is suspect its on the inaccessible back of the thing. Paris Rhone and Valeo are one and the same. If you have an alternator problem and are looking for a like for like fix, you may do as well to take yours to an auto electrician place and have it fixed, it will be the cheapest way to go.

I agree with the poster who suggested getting one from an auto recycler (scrapyard) . Mine cost £14 and has 70 amp output when required. Minor shims/adjustments to get perfect belt alignment should be within the scope of anyone with a toolbox, and the only modification would be a smaller diameter pulley to whack up the revs on a slower revving diesel.

Thats all very well, but look at all the messing about you got to do, shims, pulleys etc, fine if your inclined and have the time to do it, some alternators on vp engines are isolated, (being a vp trained engineer I should know off hand but been out the game for a short while so cant remember without digging out all my technical stuff) your diy scrapyard job may do no end of harm in the end meaning you will have to replace it again and other stuff along the line, also how many miles has a scrapyard jobby done ?? will it fail in a couple weeks after all the work needed to fit it only to go through all the same procedure again.

Thanks all. I was away from the boat and just needed to sort out with adverc what replacement prestolight was needed. I was gonna leave changing it all until winter but the old alt has died (probably shims- it still sometimes charges at high revs).

I was running up my spare 2003 this morning and noticed the alternator has its label.
It is a Valeo A13N rated 14V/50A.
Cheers
Bob
