best thing to do is get a manual on the engine' the green wirees could either be a pick up point from the stattor coil, a test point for the stator or the loom used in you engine is a standard loom used in other models,

A, manual would be the first thing' then see the circuit diagrame for a charge point of the loom'

What doses it say the green wire is for?

What year is the engine ?

Converting to electric start will involve fitting a starter motor and a solenoid. You may need mountings fastenings etc etc for the motor. You will need the associated wiring. The existing flywheel may or may not have the ring gear to engage with the starter motor pinion.

Usually electric start engines also have battery charging. You may need the stator coil and the rectifier if they are not already fitted.

Depending on what you have to buy ; there could well be a complete kit at a price, and what you can obtain 2nd hand from a parts motor it may or may not be a viable proposition.

It could well be more sensible to look out for a decent electric start model and sell the rope start one.

I am surprised that Yamaha would make an engine as large as 40 hp without electric start as standard. What is the history of your engine?

Bought it off a guy on here it runs well :) its yamaha 40 hp and the year is 1979 i think its got 2 green wires not connected im not sure but i think they go to a rectifier when one is fitted the work shop manual ive got is not very clear..
