Hi to everyone on board.
I am going to look at a motor boat next weekend with a view to buying her (obviously subject to surveys and trials)
my question is as the broker has been unable to give me an answer on this is

it is a 34ft boat with 2 volvo aqad 41a diesel engines.

does anyone know or could give an estimate on what the fuel consumption should i be getting on it?

thank you in advance

It depends what make and model is is and wether stern or shaft drive.

We have a princess 330 on shafts with ad41p fitted cruising at 18 knots we ra using approx 12 gal a hour for the boat
Hope that helps as Paul said a lot depends on type of drive you have

Hello & welcome
We have a 10.4mtr motor boat(planing hull)with 2x AD 41p and we use approx 9gls an hour combined or 2mls to the gallon. Usually @ 25knts.
Regards
MM1

Your stil not telling us the make and model of the boat, until you do a proper answer cannot be given as each model varies on hull shape and design which is a contributing factor to help answer your question.

I'm guessing at a Princess 35?

ok fair point - I don't want to give the game away as a couple of years ago I was beaten to the post when I was going to buy a boat.
that said I can tell you it has a planning type hull with loa as 34ft but as it has a bathing platform fitted at the aft and where the anchor point is at the bow I would probably guess the hull would be 30ft in the water x 10ft 6ins beam.

thanks for your help so far

is there anything I should know about this engine in general?

Thanks for your PM , I'm afraid it's a stab in the dark on that boat but I'd say an easy 2 mpg at a cruise of 25 knots at 3000 rpm maybe a little more in a calm sea. Good luck with your pursuit.

Oldgit - The Birchwood to which you refer was built in 1990. That makes it 24 years old.

.
Only 6 years from new and major and expensive work needed on both outdrives, within 12 months more expensive repairs carried out.

Maths was never my favourite subject. Outdrives on the other hand ......:)

That money is going to get you into a Turbo 36 with massive after cabin with newer TAMD60C on shafts, and in the case of mine new cutlass bearings and shafts seals both sides.

So that's no serious shaft drive maintenance for another 8-10 years.

OK so fuel consumption would only be 1.5MPG at cruise speed around 16-18 knots, but stripping a couple of outdrives every year or 2 buys a lot of fuel.

In all the hundreds maybe thousands of outdrives I have serviced over the last 25 plus years I have never had to rebuild or even reseal the same drives over again after 5 years use let alone 2 years. A great plug for your boat though Trevor.

AD41's and DP290 outdrives are probably one of the most robust engine and outdrive packages out there and the easiest to fix. But you seem to think you have to move fast to grab a bargain, in the boat world there is no such thing as a bargain, bargains equal money pits so don't rush the decision.
