At the weekend after hitting something fairly substantial our 2 blade prop has become a one blade prop.
The Boat is a Moody 27 originally fitted with a Volvo MD7B.
It has been re engined with a Beta 20 but the prop and shaft as far as we are aware is the original one.
We now urgently need help with sourcing a new prop, either as original or to suit the new engine. (Trip planned for next week!!)

Can anyone recommend somewhere to start the search, preferably in the North West...

Thanks

I recently re-engined with a beta 20 and had good service from Lancing Marine (south coast). Price was comparable to others and delivery was under a week.
Alternatively, castle Marine gave good service on prop selection and their delivery was good but they were just pipped on price.
Good luck with the repair.

Spud7,

I had a similar experience with my Moody during the recent floods. The river had lots of debris in it and my prop was damaged.

The boat was lifted out and examined. Unfortunately hitting debris with the prop has also damaged the cutlass bearing, bent the shaft and coupling to the gearbox and damaged the shaft seal. Also the debris was thrown into the rudder causing further damage. It's turning out to be very expensive.

I hope you have not had the same but please get the boat checked out by an expert as just replacing the prop may not be all that is necessary.

Good luck.

You could try a call or email to Hamble Propellors at Bursledon for advice and/or checking of the propulsion gear. Second hand props also kept by the Chandlery Barge at Bursledon, they've a container full of them, all diameters and pitches(stamped on the bosses; you may neeed the old one checked for the taper and a gauge to measure it, also if a woodruff key is fitted and size. As mentioned a thorough check of the mountings and cutless/P-bracket is a necessity.

I second the concern about other damage. We caught a hefty rope which was cleared by a diver. 3 days later the cutlass bearing gave out due to a bent shaft. The whole of the stuffing box and associated bits are beyond economical repair and need replacing. We are stuck in Poole far from our normal repair people and the bill will be £2000 plus!!

If the original engine was a Volvo MD7, that would have had a LH prop, the Beta 20 needs a RH prop, (I have a couple of years ago done the same engine swap).

Either you don't have the original prop, or you have been running the gearbox in reverse to go ahead and vice versa.

I can't speak for others but yes the damage to my boat has been covered by insurance. But that doesn't mean I am not out of pocket financially.

Insurance doesn't cover every cost incurred.

There is also the matter of loss of use of the boat for weeks and the worry. Unlike car insurance they don't provide a loan boat for use while your own is being repaired.

It depends on your policy - it would need to cover accidental damage to underwater parts.

Section 1.1.5 of my standard AXA policy would cover this damage.

The OP needs to check his policy.
