Hi,

I have a Jeanneau Sunlight 31 with a sugar scoop transom and am trying to source an appropriate boarding ladder. The attached picture, found on line, shows a Jeanneau Sun Fast 31 which has an identical stern so this type of ladder would be perfect. I've trawled the tinterweb but can't for the life of my find anything like it. Can anybody please advise where I might
find one like it. Cheers. 7397276_20200316074616156_1_XLARGE.jpg

You will probably have to have one made to measure but have you asked here? https://m.facebook.com/groups/136632633104672?group_view_referrer=profile_browser

If you can get a ladder with more steps, that would be better. Our 34 has, I think, four steps, and when folded like the one shown extends to the top of the pushpit. This makes it usable in an emergency.

Also, if you find a suitable ladder, as Johnalison says, make sure you have a system that enables you to pull the ladder down if you unexpectedly find yourself in the water - very important as I know from experience...

When you fit it, make sure you have a way to get it down if you're in the water, even if it's only a bit of string. Mine didn't used to be and if I'd been on my own once, I could have been in big trouble/
Snap! :)

Thank you for the replies, they are very useful and I totally get the bit about being able to deploy an ladder from the water. Having relooked at the various options, I'm probably going to go for a 4 step telescopic ladder.

Apologies, my next question is about attaching the ladder. Because I will be fixing it on the sugar scoop, I can't access into the mould which makes using nuts and bolts impossible. Will screws alone hold when the ladder when in use?

I would not use screws/selftappers. Is there no void at all into the sugarscoop with access from inside the boat? If no access, is there a void of at least 80mm?, If so, you could fit a circular watertight access hatch a little way away from the fastenings so you can get a hand in to hold a nut. The sugarscoop edge normally is the join between the hull and deck mouldings. Where they are bonded, is there a wide flange, usually covered by fendering, through which you could bolt? I know you posted a photo of a similar boat, but what exactly does yours look like?

There are loads of stainless ladders available at good prices. Find one that is near to what you want and have it modified by your local non marine stainless engineering shop. I'd do it for you if you could post it with a drawing.
