Ahoy Sailors!

First of all, my compliments to this wonderful forum, best I've seen so far! Impossible to beat both quality and humor stated here. Anyway, I'm kinda lost at certain terms, used pretty much on this forum. I do realise I'm a newbie, but please *cough* explain these terms for me:
SWMBO? (must be the girlie partner, right?
Stinky? (my father used to say 'a true sailor starts to stink after 3 days at sea, not sooner)
Raggy? (must be a hippy kinda low-budget boat owner????)

Many thanks in advance!

Rene

SWMBO - she who must be obeyed (wife, partner etc)

Raggie - sailing boat, from Rag and Sticks, ie sail and mast

Stinkie - powerboat, from stinkpot, referring to smell of big engines, and clouds of smoke

Welcome,Beagle!
SWMBO -she who must be obeyed, originally from a novel by H. Rider-Haggard, more recently applied to Maggie Thatcher.
Stinkie 'driver' of a 'stinkpot', a motor boat
Raggie, 'Sailor ' who relies on sticks and rags [mast and sails]
Is it true that the reason dutch ensigns are the largest seen afloat is so you can't be mistaken for frenchmen?

Ahhh, thanks for all your help. So, I'm a raggie!!!! hehehehe. Must inform my girlie (or better swmbo) that she ain't no stinkie either....

For us it's very easy to spot a frog, even without an ensign (their's vertical). It's the funny smell of their girlies and their awful beer! Wouldn't be easy to spot the difference between a Dutch boat or one from Luxemburg, same horizontal lines and colours......

A Dutch friend told me that their ensigns are economical - when it gets ragged at the back, just trim it up whereas do the same with a French one and they've lost a colour

No, the French one is that way so that even they can't get it upside down.

my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

Nonono, Jeanne. We just have these huge ensigns because they last us longer, as Spuddy suspected.....
And beagle: welcome compatriot...and join in with the fun..

cheers

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

Thanks Heerenleed, thanks to you I found out about this forum.
Speaking of being ship with the National ensign, I did 'repair' one multiple times. Friends were so embarresed, bought me a brand new one. That's the way to do it!

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

You Dutch are a bit shy when it comes to putting your hands in your pockets for flags. Last year in Dartmouth we met a Dutch couple with a HR49 and the smallest courtesy flag I've ever seen. They were such a nice couple that we presented them with our spare ensign, and their little one now hangs on my office wall.

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

Personally, I consider this smart budget planning. In the end, they got a free flag, didn't they? Although, once you own a HR way beyond a 30 ft, I think it is a bit cheap to wait for a free ensign. On the other hand, you probably need this kind of budget planning to affort a 49ft ship........

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

You are right, of course. They did get a free flag. However, they are sailing to the Scillies this year and we will meet up so at least I will get the pleasure of seeing it again.

They had completely re-decked their boat - must have cost a fortune in teak and labour. Perhaps this is why they had economised on the flag, although I now suspect it's a national trait!

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

Funny! Actually imho that's typical Dutch. Save money on silly things and blow away your hard earned euro's on other issuesWhat I do not really understand is why we (the Dutch) have an international name of being cheap. I do not know any cheap 'Hollanders' myself except for my sister. Then again, she does have a bigger boat..... Time for a new subject: any tips & trick for visiting Ramsgate?

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

regarding cheapness... not sure, but in South Africa we have a saying - go Dutch, which means each person pays their own way (for example going Dutch on a date)

Re: Huge ensigns are cheaper in the end..

I heard that expression the first time I was in Canada, years ago. They had to explain it to me! Here in Holland you either split the bill or when you invite people (even on a date) you pay for it fully... and hope you will be invited yourself one day... I remember a certain day in Cornwall when a friend and myself were entertained by this two senior UK residents. We had a wonderful time and at the end, picked up the tap without any questions... They were absolutely 'flabber-gasted'......

Hi Beagle, welcome to the forum.

One more you should be aware of, to become a fully-fledged afficionado of Forum Speak:

HWMO = He Who Must Obey, or the opposite to SWMBO.

And do froggie girlies really smell funny..? I've never been close enough to find out..! Teehee... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Ahh thanks, learned another thing today. So, any other weird abriviations or terms I should be aware of? Anyway, can't say all frog girlies smell 'funny' (that's a nice way to say stink), but in the good ol' days I encountered a couple. These days I am not allowed to smell any girlie.......

Btw: Santa's a pretty looking boat!
