Help! 'Still Looking' for Colvic Watson Jura 35 named 'Pride of Jura'

Since my earlier post last year my quest to find the 'Pride of Jura' goes on.

I have recieved PM with various sightings but none turned out to be the 'Pride of Jura'
she was a renovation project featured in 'Sailing today' in 1998 and at that time was owned by Andrew Clunies-Ross.

I have now identified all six of the CW Jura 35 class boats in my research for my paper on the 'History of the Colvic Watson Motor Sailer part 2' but would still like to hear from anyone who knows where she is now and even better an owners contact details.

Also if any readers have a boat in 'Glasson Marina' I belive the 'Isle of Jura' is there, can someone please take some pictures of her for me or again better still the owners contact details.

For those who do not know what a Jura class looks like this is her sister ship 'Star of Jura' as the Jura class does not look like a normal Colvic Watson

One of these boats was destroyed by fire in the Crinan canal basin a the southern end some years ago????????????

Thanks for the info only problem is what boat? what Marina?

I know where 4 of the boats are right now and all six names but I do not know where 'Pride of Jura' is, the others were:

Spirit of Jura:-last reported somewhere in Med.
Star of Jura: - France
Maid of Jura:- ?
Isle of Jura:- Glasson Marina (we think)
Tegwynt:- Garleloch

I put on the thinking cap.....It was Maid of Jura and she used to be in Port Edgar then changed hands and it was during the repositioning move she was lost in the canal when something went bang under the wheelhouse...Maybe gas???

Many thanks for the information,this ties up with other information I have that a Jura35 was seen at Port Edgar some years ago, but the name was not known and all efforts to trace her have come to another dead end.
Its bits of information like this that make the 'missing link'.
I have spoken to Peter Leonard Marine in Newhaven after one PM who reported seeing a large CW had been there for a few years ashore this afternoon, but they surprisingly do not know the name of the boat, but will pass on my details to her owner.

folk at crinan canal may have details or memory of the boat that went up in flames? or crinan hotel. or local police? might be worth a phone call or two, or an excuse for a beer there...

do you know roughly when, cos i'm up at tayvallich now and again, can ask around. (and any boat fire around crinan may get confused with the boat yard fire there about 25 years ago)

According to bilgediver he thinks a couple of years ago,his information ties up with what I knew of Maid of Jura but I lost the trail of her and he may well be right and it would be good to confirm if it was her or not but he does remember her name.

Thanks for the info,bilgediver seems sure it was the Maid of Jura that was destroyed, at present I do not know if she was a total loss or not, if not anyone who knows what a Jura class Colvic Watson is would never have converted her into a motorboat (I hope).

Your information is correct, I spoke to Alex Howie the harbour master this afternoon who confirms there was a CW Jura class boat blew up, caught fire and later sank above no 4 lock on the Crinan canal.
The explosion completly blew off the deck and wheelhouse (some explosion).
What was left was recovered later and taken away and I can only assume she was declared a total loss.
He was not sure if it was the 'Maid of Jura' or the 'Pride of Jura' both of which he said used the canal.
To the best of my knowledge the 'Pride of Jura' is still about somewhere hence my search for her so I assume as you thought it was the 'Maid of Jura' that sank and this is why I can not also find her.

Not sure if this is still relevant, but there is a boat called 'Pride of Jura', that looks very similar currently moored in St Kats, I'm not familiar with Colvic Watson 35's, but from google images, it appears to be a similar type of boat...hopefully the same!

Thank you for the information, she has been there before so the one you have seen is probably the Pride of Jura and I now know who the owner is.

Maid of Jura was destroyed in Crinan. Ahe had been based at Port Edgar for a few years. The new owners went ashore and something is thought to have triggered a gas explosion. Could have been the early 90's ?????

There was only six of the famous Colvic Watson Jura Class Motor Sailers.

The Maid of Jura left Port Edgar with her new owner for the Clyde after being just bought, her owner had just stepped ashore to pay fees when she blew up and caught fire in No 4 basin on the Crinan canal on 9th August 2000.

The later report confirmed that the explosion was due to a gas leak where a gas pipe had been rubbing against the bulkhead, such was the explosion her winch was reported to have been found 142' from the boat, the hull remained initially afloat but was sunk due to the amount of water applied by the local fire brigade, as can be seen she HAD to be recovered and was later declared a total loss.
