Help required: What kind of classic is it?

I have been asked to help someone to find out a certain type of classic. It's a 19th century painting which will be restored but the big question is, what kind of boat could this be? I am really limited when it comes down to classic boats, but could this be a fishing barge?

well, I'll start...I'll probably be wrong, but at least it will start a discussion.

The vessel appears to be a ketch, with lug topsails (an early to mid nineteenth century feature) with sails that have not been cutched or tanned. That suggests that she is not a fishing vessel. She might have a fiddle bow; a later 19th century feature. She's flying an ensign (impossible to say which) from the peak of the mizzen gaff.

I think she might be a yacht?

Certainly a pleasure yacht, and for my money hull is built on the lines of Spray, same bow, transom, etc and similar size.

Many thanks for the information. Perhaps more details regarding the ensign could be obtained during the restoration process. With hinsight, I think it resembles a "Gaffelschoener" (gaff-schooner), see picture below

it's flying the stars and stripes, but you knew that. The pic is signed but can't make out the name.

She is a gaff ketch with late 19th century gaff tops'ls rather than the more modern thimble headed tops'ls ( now known as gaff tops'ls). If the scale of the people on board is correct I would agree she's a Yacht, the bumkin also implies she is quite small.
