Hello everyone . I had 4 coats off pettit 1015 captains varnish on my wood . Just went out today and sanded and put on the 5th .. As soon as i finished a few clouds blew in and it started to rain.
Rain drops all over varnish , not really sure what to do with it now .

Its been raining off and on for the past 2 hours so i havent got back to the boat to have a look .

I called pettit , they were not much help . Told me it may be cloudy or blister and to remove all the coats and start over .
I was thinking i would just have to remove the last coat by sanding ...
Any suggestions ? Anyone else have this problem ?

Just wait until properly cured before touching with any abrasive and after sanding leave to cure again before thoroughly cleaning and applying a top coat so you dont work in any additional foreign or sanded matter. Trying to rectify a bad paint job is more difficult (in terms of skill involved) than just stripping it right back and starting over.

It depends on the type of varnish. A 2-pack lacquer for instance when applied in coats essentially dissolves into the previous coat and bonds with it - there is no concept of a layer at that point so you can't just sand back one layer to fix.

Sand down as mentioned and re-apply.

I had the same issue with epifanes varnish a few years ago. I managed to sort it with sanding the next day. This reminds me I have the same area to varnish again DOH :-(
