I have a problem that has baffled me. I have a strong spark and fuel going in but its not firing, I mean nothing no sound of life at all! Its a Johnson sea horse 35hp. New plugs, I have rebuilt the carb as it was gummed up. Now the strangest part is the fact it ran 3 days ago and ran well. Fresh fuel, I have tried everything I can think of. I would not have thought it would be the timing because it did run fine. So any ideas please?

Again, carb has been rebuilt. The engine has been flushed through. It ran 3 days ago. Fuel getting into the cylinders because a mist of fuel comes out if you turn it over with plugs out. There is a strong spark.

Strong spark out

doesn't mean a strong spark in under compression.

I remember from the old biker days a test spark plug that you cound wind in and see the spark jump as if it were in there, not much help that I guess.

Is the strong spark a single arc or splattered?

Sorry yes carb rebuilt before it ran. HT leads can only go one way round because of their length and its pretty easy to get that right ;) Well about the sparks both are strong and seem fine. So it is very puzzling, I may pop the flywheel off and check the timing. I have read a guide on how to do this and also have a freind whos a ex marine engineer with about 30 years experience, although he lives over a hundred miles away he still helps over the phone! So any other ideas before I rip it all apart and start from scratch?

You cant seem to find them anymore which is quite irritating because they would be perfect right now!

no -

the plug I was talking about has a gap in the body about 1/4" for the spark to jump across in free air, it was only the check the spark it didn't get to the engine.
