I know this is not perhaps a relavent subject on this site but I do spend most of my internet time on here and I am fed up with the cntinuous stream of Porn sites that keep bombarding me, about every 10 mins. I am not a techno person and I have to sometimes shut the computor down as I cannot get rid of the rubbish on the screen. Why me and what can I do to stop it. As I type this one has come on again. If I am quick with the cursor I can shut it down before it takes hold.
Help please.

Go to the first tab on Internet Properties and check you home page and clear history, delete temp files and maybe cookies, though if you delete your cookies you'll have to log into all your sites like this one again.

I had all that sort of crap, and tried everything to get rid of it. I was then put onto something called "Pop up Stopper", and it works brilliantly. It "Zaps" something every 4/5 minutes, and pops up a little icon to tell you when it happens. God knows where these interlopers come from, or how they got hold of me in the first place, but I'm troubled no longer. It was downloaded from their site, and cost around £30 - well worth it.

Download <A target="_blank" HREF=http://spybot.safer-networking.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download> Spybot-Search & Destroy </A> and run it regularly.

If you've received porn by PM, then let Kim know, there's a very good chance it can be tracked

As said already, download Spybot, run it regularly and update its database regularly. Also, Google's latest version of their tool bar (available off google.com) has a popup stopper (I run Popup Manager as well and they both seem to coexist happily together). If these things don't work, then there are issues with Microsoft Messanger, but thats another story.

I now never get popups, except, that is for the visited sites own eg Kim's Landrovers and Jaguars!

There are viruses and spyware that can cause what you describe. See here for info:
http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/fs.htm
If you are on dial up, also check that your home page or dial up number hasn't been changed and run an up to date anti virus programme.
Then, if anti virus hasn't picked it up, it is probably spyware and to find the cause Spybot is good:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
who both do basic freeware versions.

MAILWASHER

I installed Mailwasher a few months ago (the freeware version) and seemed to get a hugely increased amount of spam email almost instantaneously. I have subsequently uninstalled it but now am in the situation where I get 50-60 spam emails a day. Am I being cynical in wondering whether mailwasher attracts spam to justify its existence? And is there any other solution out there other than changing my email address?

TIA,

AJ

If you've installed peer to peer sharing software such as Kazaa or E-Donkey for mp3's and other file downloads they are notorious for spyware.

Re: MAILWASHER

Don't blame Mailwasher, spam levels have soared over the past few months and now represent about 45% of all e mails. Most of the current spam comes from a handful of clever spammers.
If you use an e mail address that is anything like "name@popular isp" spamming programmes will find it. Also any e mail you use on a newsgroup or mailing list will also find it's way to the spammers.
If you change your e mail address, you will be receiving spam again within weeks. You can limit the amount by using an obscure name, a lesser known isp and only give the address out to a small number of friends.
You can't stop spam, but you can save time by using programmes such as Mailwasher to filter out the rubbish before you download it. They are most effective when you take time to set up and regularly update the filters.

There's a misunderstanding here somewhere. The comment was that porn was received by PM ( no mention of attachments). I made the assumption when PM was mentioned, that the recipient had actually received and opened a PM.

I suspect a lot of the confusion is round terminology. Many are unaware that while browsing this site, people can receive pop ups and the like, which are due to their security settings in general, and nothing to do with the forum, and equate PM's with pop ups and the like.
