We want help to bring an Aqua Star GRP 20’ motor cruiser from Falmouth to Plymouth Marina as we have not had dealings with this size boat before. We would drive anyone willing to lend a hand with skippering down from Plymouth to Falmouth for a launching at 2pm, tide times on reaching Plymouth may mean anchoring off shore for the night. Any expenses incurred would be reimbursed.

A number of thoughts:

What engine is fitted and what’s the cruising speed?

Is this a new purchase / a new boat to you? If so there is a high risk of mechanical failure.

Why would you need to anchor offshore in a 20 foot boat when aiming for Plymouth? There are multiple 24 hour options for Plymouth assuming you mean the Plymouth on the south coast of England where our Navy is based.

Have you considered putting the boat on a trailer and towing it until you establish reliability if a new purchase?

I think you are asking for a lot more than a bit of help skippering.

Sorry if my response comes across as negative. In the nautical world an abundance of caution is often not quite enough….

Henry :)

Thank you Henry for your response, it is a new boat to us and we just wanted a supporting figure with us. We will be mooring at our Berth in Plymouth Marina but by the time we will arrive the tide will be out

In response to your first question the boat has a new Beta 25 He 40A engine with 49 hours running time and although we have knowledge of the waters surrounding Plymouth we do not have any experience of the coastal waters from Falmouth to Plymouth.

It‘s already on a trailer !

Get it towed round to Plymouth, drop in in the water and enjoy your voyage of discovery.

In terms of berth access with an unknown helper on board I would have stuck it on an overnight walk ashore visitors mooring upon arrival and moved onto your regular berth when conditions allow the next day.

As above,

Go to Plymouth by road, then get used to your boat at your leisure...

Thank you this is what we are now going to do, many thanks to all for advice given

Fine.

Spend a few moments checking the trailer, no fun in a break down on the road either. Coupling, hitch, wheels, bearings, brakes lights, rollers/bunks.
Properly secure the boat to the trailer, which even improves driving properties. Some on already on the pic, might be ok.

If you get new, cargo strap(s) with ratchet would be my choice.

And of course you need a car fit & legal for the task.

Yes indeed, all done, ship shape and ready to roll; but, thank you for raising these points, much appreciated
