Just heard from an American friend wanting these filters for his boat in France.

"Items that I need that may be easier to get in UK:
Engine-mounted fuel filter 10 micron for Perkins 4-108 Diesel Engine
Replacement lubricating oil filter for same. Because it mounts upside down there should be a little rubber flapper inside where it screws onto the engine".

Can you help please?

I think I'm on the right track here http://www.parts4engines.com/4-99-4-107-4-108-filter-service-set-late-type/
but any tips welcomed

thanks
S.

In the manual for the perkins 4 108 I have there are 2 kinds of lubricating oil filter. A paper filter element that the steel bowl screws into the side of the engine with a centre bolt or a canister type that screws onto a threaded spigot upwards. Neither I would call upside down.

I think you need more info from your friend.

OMG!

Maybe it would make sense to get a few spare oil filters and put them on the shelf then?

Be careful with the oil filter. I was told it was the same as the Rover V8, but I was then supplied filters that did not have an Anti Drain Back device, essential on the Perkins, because the filter is mounted upside down and will drain when the engine is switched off.

With regards the fuel filters they are CAV filters on mine and easily accessible from agricultural merchants as they are fitted to lots of older tractors. I hope that this applies to France as well.

I have owned 4.108's during the last 30 years (I still have one) and this is the first time I hear this. I do not understand why draining should be a problem. Instead I know that the filter does have an internal relief valve that allows a bypass in case the filter clogs. The fact that it is upside down is of concern only when I change it: it is more messy!

Regarding the filter type, there are many equivalent and it is just a matter of choosing the one available at the time of purchase.
Just a few possibilities: FRAM PH2821A, AC-DELCO PF42, NAPA 1806, VOLVO 11711977, MANN 940/1, etc etc

With the time it takes to crank a 4108 to start up it will have got oil pressure !
You must be kidding!!! When the battery is sound, my 4.108 starts in a couple of turns also after a long winter.
On the other hand, in the absence of an improbable vent hole on the dome of the filter, I strongly doubt that the oil will drain out of the filter itself.
In any case next time I change the filter I will take a look and see if there is a flap valve that prevents draining; indeed it would make the replacement less messy.
