HI all,

This time I have a problem. I am trying to help somebody who is taken for a ride, and possibly a lot of other people as well.

He has a 100HP older 4 stroke Yamaha, that does not engage the gears at times. I had a look at it, I was told that the shifting dog that sselects forward, neutral, reverse is worn and needs to be replaced.

However, when I took it apart and had a look all was in good condition, except for the edges of dogs worn. Small wear only, as one can expect from use. When I changed gears with my hand or a pair of pliers directly on the small selector shaft, there is a positive change and latching in any one of the three positions.
Now, when all is assembled, the gear does not engage reliably.

A closer look told me, that the cable from the morse control does not move the selctor to its designed end. The yamaha agent keeps ordering new dog, and says they selctor never moves to the end of its travel.

This is BS, if yamaha designs a guide with a roller in, where the cable attaches, that is 100mm long, the required travel is 100mm.

The proof is, when the morse cable control is at its end, disengaging the link, I can still move the selector 10mm (approx) by hand to full engagement.

There was not enough time to attach indicators to show angles traveled for both the selector and the required angle of the selector.

The statement "they are all like that" means to me, that somebody installed a lot of controls with insufficient travel.

Any expert here to advice me, or anybody have the specs for travel etc.?

If my english or my description is not clear I can make a drawing.

Thanks for reading this, and thanks if anybody can advice me.

Regards

Ongolo
