I have just changed the water pump, what a nightmare, never had a car that requires a cam belt removal to swap a pump, am shattered after taking most of the afternoon to carry out a 1 hour job, lol lol lol

CAR- 1998 ford escort, 1.6 zetec, a/c p/s options.

I am trying to refit the belt, and have forgotten the route, it is a single flat belt, I believe it is called a serpentine belt.. though after a couple of hours fruitless searching, I can find no diagram or description that matches what I appear to have. I have made a diagram to show basic pulley layout, I have numbered the pulleys to assist any descriptive explanations you may be able to give me.

It is a long belt, yet the obvious route (I thought) left it way to slack. I seem to remember it doubled back on itself. I thought I had a diagram on the door pillar but that turned out to be a generic diagram of a belt, with a date of the last change. grrr. Sorry for the none boaty post, but I don't know where else to turn, the ford and motor forums all appear to be for American vehicles.

Also, how do I set the tension, I removed it by dropping the water pump pulley, hoping it would become clear with some extra space to see what was going on, it didn't.

I can't believe this is so difficult, glad I am not stuck at the side of the road ~ what were ford thinking?

pulleys 6 & 7 appear to be routing / tension pulleys, I have not attempted to adjust them (how?) yet

I finally finished before thinking I would find a photo or diagram on the interweb with

3 6 4 5 7 2 1 3

This is just too tight to get it over the last pulley (but as said I also can't fathom how to loosen and tension the set up either).

I think I may have tried your method and it left it very slack, unless you know this is a fact and I tried a different route when I had it far too slack.. It is worse than one of those barrel puzzles /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

any use ?

tricky clicky

[/ QUOTE ]Cheers, I found that, but it is not the same, my alternator is below the p/s pump and I don't seem to have that swinging arm. My head is hurting from 2 hours of googling and searching auto forums. I think it is the a/c on mine that makes it differ to most.

hmm, searching for serpentine belt certainly send you into some exotic non-mechanical pages /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

this any use ?

(PS I never knew a car had so many engine variants. Most forums talk about a diagram under the bonnet somewhere, though.)

AHA

DAYCO in Australia. Millions of diagrams and a reference doc, too. Is 6-19 the one ? From the guide, then the illustrations.

7.9 is about the closest config, but routing that way would put the belt groove side-to onto the pulley wheels 6 and 7, that can't be right as they are flat smooth pulleys, so presumably should mate to the back of the belt.

I will go out and search again for a sticker around the engine bay, I found that (there should be a sticker) on google just after I posted the first message, I didn't see one today, but then, I wasn't looking either.

The most honest advice you can get is "call in a mobile mechanic". You are in deep **** and if you are just a little out with the set up your engine will be knackered the first time you turn it over. Garages charge £400 because they have the equipment and know that people don't want to take the gamble.

Are any of the wheels spring loaded ? i.e. does one of them move on a track that has a spring to keep the tension.

Top tip, digital camera before pictures /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
