Help needed Volvo Penta hours counter

Can't find it in the manual!
I have a VP D2-55 engine with instrument panel without ignition switch. The rev counter on the panel is working perfectly, but the engine hours counter within the rev counter only works intermittently.

Question: How does the hours counter receive input? Is there a single electrical wire feed to the rev counter for both revs and hours from the engine, or are there separate feeds. Could it be a loose wire, or is the hours counter faulty?

Any advice is most welcome!

Volvo tachos are notorious for hours meter failure. Temporary fixes include removing the tacho and leaving it in an airing cupboard for a few weeks.

The best solution seems to be to fit a separate hours meter - not very expensive. You just need to find a 12v feed that is engine dependant.

Is the hours counter an LCD display? I've seen this problem before, but not on a Volvo.

To answer your question, there isn't a separate feed wire.

Take the rev counter off and blow air over it from a fan heater or hairdryer for 20 minutes or put it in the airing cupboard overnight. The hours totalled are not lost, just the display goes blank. It was Volvo's little joke supply something for a boat where the display doesn't like damp. If you don't get their little joke they sell you an expensive new rev counter! As said elsewhere, you could get a mechanical counter, Vetus amongst others do them at £30-£40 'ish.

I will give it a burst with the hair dryer before spending any money. If the total hours are not lost it is an annoyance, but not a great problem.
