Hi there everyone

I am new to this but I am looking for some help in identifying the 3 boats which appear in the attached painting. It has been suggested that they may be Cornish Crabbers. From the writing on the reverse of the painting I suspect that the painting itself came from mainland Europe.

Can anyone out there she3d any light on the type of boat concerned.

Any assistance would be much appreciated

As a wild guess, I think they may be French Tunnymen. A sadly deceased artist called John Chancellor did the benchmark painting of these craft. One I think called oddly "with the other men" (Artist explains). There is one called BICHE which some enthusiasts are planning to restore.

I agree, They look like rather stylised French 'Thoniers' - Breton Tunny boats fleets of which sailed from ports like Concarneau. The high bows, steeply steeved bowsprits, and the fishing gear reaching the height of the mast - the 'rod tips' curving outward at the level of the topsail were lowered to horizontal when fishing to stream the lines well clear of the hull.

See a pic of a model in the Musee de la Peche in Concarneau: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:P1040307-musee-de-la-peche-concarneau.jpg

Many thanks for all your help - now I shall try to identify the artist, which is the whole point of my original question - I thought that if I could identify the geographical area from the boat type it would narrow down the search for the artist!!

Just Googled it, but got the wrong memory. http://www.johnchancellor.co.uk/acatalog/Day_of_the_Men.html was what I thought it was, but I think its a different image I can't find. His worth is well worth a look, though.
I noticed (eventually) that Seagreen is inter alia an artist - Any hints on how I might now trace the artist of the painting? I also note that you have a good Scottish name so any help to a fellow Expat Scot would be much appreciated

A strange painting - boats definately look Breton, painting has (to my eye) more than a hint of Japanese in style / execution.....not that I am suggesting that as an origin, but maybe an influence on the Artist?

PM'd back. Incidentally, examining the picture more closely, the topsail of the boat in the middle seems to have battening on the topsail. I'm led to the conclusion that the style of the picture suggests it may have been painted by one of the large chinese commerial studios trying to break into new markets. Just a guess.
