I am fitting an Hydrovane steering gear on my transom and would like to use filler to level the fiberglass surface inside the hull to take the backing plate. What do in need I imagine that I need some two pack epoxy. Cover the area and fix the backing plate in place, how long does it take to set hard enough to tighten up the bracket.
Regards Mike

If it is going on a hull made of polyester, why not use a polyester based filler ie Isopon or P-45.

it will cure much quicker than epoxy, particularly in coldish weather - 1hr compared with 24

It sounds as if strenght is not required so why go to all that extra expense and trouble>?

You'll need to thicken the mix to something like a paste or it will just run out. use something like 403 micro fibres from West Epoxy or just use some talc.

Isnt the plate there to spread the load exerted from the hydrovane once it is steering the yacht, so using a standard filler wouldnt give you enough strength, wouldnt it just crack?

Is the backing plate shaped to the hull ? if it is then you wont need any filler and you could just use sikoflex to hold it in position ?

Im just about to go through the same proceedure and was reading the hydrovane website only a week ago, fortunately my old tub is steel so less of an issue.

The filler on the inside of the hull is to remove the point loads that will occur without due to the 'rough' interior surface.
Polyester with filler to stiffen should be fine, it's what the hull is made of (+ fibreglass).
Or epoxy with a filler as stated earlier to peanut butter consistency. Not the lumpy type!
