Help mercruiser 4.2L D Tronic wont rev past 2500rpm under load

RESULT
Barrus UK have agreed to replace the ECM and the MAP sensor at a total cost of £2694 what a result

lets hope thats the end of it
(probably not?)

Can you summarise this for us please because I must have misunderstood,

Barrus sell you a New unused or part used engine that is rated at 300 hp but does not have an ecm fitted.

You buy a new 300hp ecu from barrus but 2 years latter you establish that they sold you a 250 hp ecm and now charge you £2700 for a new 300hp ecm that your ordered and paid for two years ago

Have you consulted trading standards ?

Just a thought but the ecm will be the same part for the 250 as it is for the 300.
The values will be different , you should be able to have a software adjustment(chipped) and save the cost of a new ecm.

although the ECM apears the same, they are not, the 250hp WOT is 3600RPM the 300hp is 3800rmp, as for getting mine re-chipped, Mine is corrupt, the one I have currently fitted is on loan, hope that helps, Yes the ECM is programable, but who has the software to re-program it??

Yes, I think you have misunderstood, I purchased the engine secondhand from a mercruiser dealer, he purchased the engine from EP Barrus (uk importer) whilst under warenty the engine was returned to Barrus, where it sat for a few years, whilst it was there, certain parts were stripped of the engine, including the ECM/ECU, I purchased the engine from a mercruiser dealer who supplied the engine complete including a brand new Bravo 3 duo prop leg and transom, (all the parts missing were ordered from Barrus!) this is where the story began, hope this helps

Without wishing to put you to extra trouble when you now appear to have sorted this there are two things that stick out like a sore thumb

Barrus sent you a 250 hp ecu when you ordered a 300HP, they should be exchanging FOC now.

I spoke to a chipping company at the Birmingham Boat/caravan/motor home show a few years ago and they gave the impression that they did indeed have the equipment and skill to adjust any ecu.

At that time they were very keen to get their hands on any new engine.
If you can find one close enough to your boat who is prepared to travel it might be worth a few phone calls but this assumes Barrus dont supply you with the correct ecu you bought and paid for 2 years ago.

No, Barrus supplied me (through a mercruiser dealer) a 300hp ECM, which turns out to be corrupt, they have agreed to replace it, I have been lent a 250hp ECM to help me try and diagnose wheather the ECM was corrupt, which it was.

WARNING do not be tempted to fit a 300hp ECM to a 250HP mercruiser D Tronic engine, although they apear the same engine, both the turbo and injector pump are diferent, also the 300hp wont run right with a 250hp ECM, after over 2 years I have finally got my engine to run as it should, MERCRUISER and CUMMINS have got the wrong part number on their Systems, and if you order a new 300hp ECM you will infact get a 250HP ecm, you must demand the Bodensee ECM which is the same as the CMD 300ES,
for those who want to know, my boat (bayliner 1992 2556 command bridge) WOT 3800 24MPH , underpropped with 20" Bravo duo props 2:1 ration, going to fit 22" props, and even 24" to see whiich is best

I had a 200hp merc in my 2556 and 26" props.
My 2858 had 300hp and 26" props.

With 300hp in the little boat you will need a different gear ratio I reckon, and you should get 35 knots or more.

I've some 26" (or maybe 28" I need to check) B3 props in the shed you can borrow to test - pm me.

Hi mate, were either you 2556 or 2858 diesels?
I sent you a pm, did you get it?

yes they were both diesels by the time I'd got my hands on them, the 2556 was the 4.2LX which is a 200hp direct mechanical injection version of the more usual 220hp (which is indirect injection). The 2558 had a 300hp Yanmar. Both were bravo 3s.

2.5mpg in the 2858 is far better than 1mpg in a 2556 with a 7.4 v8, I will be happy if I get 2.5 to 3mpg.
cheers

Hi .. may I revive this thread ..
I have the same vm engine . Al be it a 220 hp and have intermittent turbo issues
If I haven’t used the boat for a couple of weeks when I get up to 2000 revs .. nothing ..it can take a while as in 10-20 mins of either normal operation of throttling up and down for the turbo to kick in ... then no probs for weeks ... ??

Turbo could be sticking due to lack of use. As you are going slow out the harbour just in turn Rev each engine in neutral 3000 rpm to force the turbo to spin , Rev for a minute or so . This is a temporary solution, sooner or later the spindle will wear out.
