Hello everyone,
I am needing a bit of advice about the raw water pump on a Volvo Penta MD22 L, I have just rebuilt the one off my boat but was concerned that it now seems difficult to turn by hand.
I know what is causing it, its an O ring (860237)that fits between the pump housing and the inside bearing, when it is all assembled this is compressed forcing the O ring on to the shaft.
Can anyone tell me is this normal and will it ease off once in use
Thanks for your help regards Neil

I don't think it should be compressed if the pump's properly assembled. I thought the purpose of the O ring was to act as a "slinger" in case of leakage. Did you follow the reconditioning instructions in the workshop manual?

Thank you for your response, No hands up I did not follow the workshop manual not having one, it seemed a pretty straight forward task, I have stripped it back a few times now and always end up with the same result in order to get the circlip in to hold the shaft and seals in place in the housing I have to push it in so far it compresses the o-ring on to the shaft.
My only thought is perhaps the o-ring should be fitted from the impeller side behind the sealing ring and not placed on the shaft between the bearing and housing.
I am working from

I would be grateful for your opinion

You're assembling it wrongly. The diagram below from the workshop manual shows you where the O ring should go. I can't find an online link to an MD22 Workshop Manual download, so I'm attaching an extract which shows you how to recondition the pump (the codes in the extract relate to the numbers on the diagram).

OK, no need for the info now. I tried ASAP but they could not identify the pump (it only has a Volvo Penta part number marked on the cover, although it clearly is made by Jabsco)
Then tried Jabsco, but at first they could not cross ref the number of the pump, but after directing them to another website which sold VP spares, they were able to give me the Jabsco pump number.
They had the parts in stock, and with very good prices, bearings about £6 each, and the seal was about £3. Very impressed.
If anyone is interested, the Volvo Number of the pump is 3580496, and the Jabsco number is 29540-1001. This is the belt driven pump as fitted to the TMD22P-C and TMD22-B, and not the cam driven pump.
Another online site was charging £22 per bearing £6 for the seal, so well done to Jabsco.
