Help! I've reggubed me battys

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

If you don't have any information on the reg or how it is wired, then that has to be the No. 1 issue, ahead of sorting the batteries.

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

That's not quite the sort of response I would have expected from a manufacturers' technical department....it all seems to be a bit iffy. I would have thought that a battery engineer would know exactly what to do - even if the that means scrapping the batteries. Did you get the job title of the person who wrote?

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

Why?

I get many pm's about computer advice. Many would be easier to diagnose hands on. I do my best at a distance. These sorts of faults are the same - hands on easy, diagnosis at a distance difficult

Sometimes you get someone who can explain the prob in detail, which makes it easier to diagnose, others just give general hints, which takes much longer to get to root cause

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

I have to say it seemed a pretty clear response to me. Two approaches given, may recover the batteries, but whatever, their life is reduced. Apart from having the batteries on hand to inspect (which is out of the question if the response was from Trojan themselves in USA) I don't see that they could have been any more exact.

As a claimed expert what other suggestions for attempting a recovery of the batteries would you make and what do you think the probability of your suggestions' success is?

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

Anybody want to bet? No more than 30% of capacity will be recovered regardless. However go for it

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

drowning gave a very clear explanation of the problem (one assumes that he explained his position to Trojan as clearly as he did here in the forum). The answer, especially regarding regarding SG to be expected, is too wooly and smells like something from a clerk or salesman, not an engineer.

I'd be interested to learn what the Trojan correspondent's job fuction is and I bet that it isn't 'engineer' unless they use the description 'engineer' to include any employee in any department vaguely related to engineering or include plumber, electrician, or mechanic, as we do in the UK.

I wouldn't take too much notice of the reply that drowning has received from Trojan, if I was in his position.

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

Lemain,
I agree re the reg, don't want this to happen again but in the meanwhile I'll use the second hand starter battery I bought.

This is what I said to Trojan
I've had a disaster - my boat's house bank of Trojan 105 6V batteries ran dry because I left them connected to a solar panel via a useless 'intelligent' charger. I've refilled them with distilled water but they don't hold charge to any extent. They are only 12 months old and I wonder if I can do anything to save them ?
The guy who replied was
Jim Le
Technical Support Engineer

but we all know what 'technical support engineer' might be.
At least he took the trouble to reply.
I'll try John's suggestion re replacing the electric lights in one pair and then charging.
I don't think the 'equalising' will do much, I think all it does is mix acid + electrolyte by vigorous gassing and diffusion will have had a couple of months to do that before I get back.

[/ QUOTE ]What we really wanted from the manufacturer was an educated opinion as to whether he would have expected his batteries to have survived such abuse and then how to proceed. We didn't get that, we got a shrug. I'd have the electrolyte changed (at a reasonable price) and it is worth trying out a couple of batteries first, I suppose. Then again, if they have got to come out, why not take them all over to the battery agent at the same time? I think that it stands an excellent chance of success. Trojans are not too hard to move about, that's one of the big advantages of them. Good luck with them, if you have to replace them I doubt that you can do better than Trojans.

What was the point about "replacing electric lights in one pair"? I didn't see John's post.

Re: Help! I\'ve reggubed me battys

What Drowning means by using the phrase "electric lights" is:

Electric lights => electro lytes
