The short sliding bit shown above is termed the "locking collar" in the manual kindly provided by PVB. Mine is a little reluctant to move, but I seem to be getting somewhat knackier at it. I thought of using some type of lubricant to help it along until I read the bit which said

"Do not use mineral or solvent based lubricants like WD40. The wrong lubricant can damage important component parts."

Could anyone suggest an alternative lubricant? Would a new lock collar (£60!) be much of an improvement ?

Use a dry PTFE spray - no chance of harming the sliding parts whatever they're made of. You'll also be able to use it on sail slides, blocks, furling gear etc etc without the mess and stickiness associated with wd40 and the like.
