Help I have a virus on my laptop non boatyard

This is definitely a topic for the lounge, but in the meantime:-
a) Google the virus and find an authentic looking website that tells you how to remove it.
b) get some decent Anti-Virus on your computer as soon as possible. AVG Free and Microsoft Security Essentials are free and adequate

+1 for Microsoft Security Essentials....... I used this free software to sort out a nasty thing called a Trojan. Most of my keyboard and also my cursor became inoperable

so after some research on another laptop I used a system called mousekeys ,this moves the cursor using the number pad ( press num lock key ) this enabled me to load the

Microsoft program and remove the Trojan , incidentally at the start of the problem I had messages flashed up to solve the problem send money to a certain site ,this I

assumed was the perpetrator . This was a couple of years past and I have been clear since but I keep the Microsoft program installed and it regularly updates itself.

Lastly to reply to previous posters this virus managed to disable the system restore and most programs .

The rider was added that to use System Restore IF the virus allowed it.

To another poster: If you have picked up a virus then taking it back to the only restore point you have (a few months ago I don't believe) will most certainly get rid of the nasties.

I always try System Restore first. If that does not work or is not available then other methods need to be used.

System restore does not remove malicious software. It merely sets the PC up as it was on a previous date. Since this process is reversable the malicious software will still exist on the PC in a series of restore files and can still contaminate the new setup.

As I have stated before no security software is perfect. The only way to guarantee removing the problem is to deep format the HDD and reinstall the operating system and applications from CD or DVD because if the master software is on the HDD this could also be contaminated.

If you buy a PC with on board master software there will be an option to create master disks. This should be done immediately to be sure they are uncontaminated with malicious software and to give a recovery option if the HDD fails.

Sorry, I should have said that if I recover a system using System Restore I delete the remaining restore points then create a Restore point for the working computer.

There are so many people who have not created the recovery Cds/DVDs, despite the warning messages, and then wonder why there is a problem recovering their PC.

Why does this new version of the forum not create links properly? Or have I missed a setting?

If you can get on the internet with this infected computer, download FREE version of AVIRA. Install it and then RUN it. AVIRA will sweep out most viruses. You are wasting your time trying to Add/Remove. If you can find the .exe file for this virus, then one good way to disable it is to rename the virus file by deleting the first letter of its name and replacing that with a $ [dollar sign] and re-start your computer. The virus file should not then be recognized. I hope this helps.

GreekYiannis,

This is unlikely to work as most malicious software includes a "hidden" file that regenerates the unwanted .exe file when the PC is rebooted. They do it deliberately to counteract exactly this attempt to remove the malicious software file(s).

Recomend to learn how to format and reinstall operating system
then not really a problem when hit by these nasty types of things.
