Hi, I am interested in learning more about boats and how to pilot/sail them. The reason I want to do this is so I can rent some boats for me, my wife and maybe some. I have had a look and some places say all I need is two people to hold a day skippers competency certificate, some say a stage two power boating licence and others say I don’t need anything. Can anyone please point me in the right direction, thank you.
More info that may help
I plan to sail around the Med/Greek islands
Boat size around 40ft
I live in Conwy and we have a marina, there site has very little information.
The only thing I know I will need for sure is a VHF qualification

Again any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

Presume motorboat... if chartering, you will need RYA ICC as a minimum... which mean Day skipper or above (I think) ... Greece/Italy etc., may have own rules .. Forget Bareboat in Spain (too close to Africa and owners would not want risk smugglers chartering boats) ... Croatia is a great area for cruising...
A 40 ft motorboat is big enough to do some serious damage in the wrong hands, so chartering companies may require a bit more than RYA day skipper + ICC + VHF ... contact chartering Co's and ask them what they require...

Super, thank you for the information.

It might not be necessary to go as far as RYA day skipper - when I bought my boat ~5yrs ago we did a couple of days own-boat training with a RYA instructor based in the same marina. Apart from the confidence this gave us, it also got us Helmsman's certificates, and he offered to qualify us for ICCs based on what we had done, although we declined as we didn't require them for anything.
The Day Skipper Practical does however automatically entitle you to an ICC, free if you're a RYA member (or at least it was when I did mine).
