Help - anyone near Studland able to help three French ladies?

If it had decompression levers it might just work. Tow it in gear and wait until it is spinning as fast as it is going to, then put the levers across.

It would be an interesting experiment.

How about the story of the Frenchman who wrapped a rope round the driveshaft, ran it via a few snatch blocks to the end of the boom, then gybed... ? :)

Pete

Next time we meet remind me to tell you the true story of a French sailor I had to deal with last year. Having been alerted by a chap drinking special brew at 9.30 in the morning who had come for a 'meeting' with our visitor, I found him stark naked in the boat, tripping out on an unknown substance with various leather straps on his anatomy!

...and did the engine start? :)

I've heard stories of people bump-starting an engine by sailing as fast as possible, letting the prop spin, and then suddenly engaging gear. I've no idea if it really works though.

Pete

Actually it did happen to me once
I had a fixed prop & it was spinning
i must have kicked the lever into gear as when i went below the engine was in tickover
I could not hear it because of the noise of wind & waves
i was surfing at over 10 Kts actually hitting 11.4 & even 11.8 kts at times

I wonder if the three dames Français were actually keeping three wine-soaked gents out of sight below decks, in order to give a distressed-damsel aura?
