Just a quick post to say hello, I’ve been messing around with boats and reading this forum for a while now. Small ribs, Dorys and my friends various (out of my price range) beauties, and I’m finally in a position to buy myself something a bit more substantial so thought it time I actually joined the forum. I’m currently looking at Merry Fisher 705’s. If anyone has any advice or opinions on these I’d love to hear them. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi jimmyboy and welcome
All the Merry Fisher range are pretty good boats
The 705 with the inboard Yanmar is a little noisy when shifting along at speed
Worth a look at the 755 too with an outboard
Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrog with the 705!
It's just Me I like outboards
There will be lots of imput for you on here thats for sure
Yep, petrol is a pita in that not every marina sells it
Thats if you are going to berth in one that is
Good move from what you have had before
Nice walk around safe access forward
Cover from the weather
No piss balling around with covers and zips and all that malarky!
Great 'pocket battleships' for camping, fishing, cruising etc

We had a MF705 as a starter boat, and were very happy with until the number of grandchildren grew.

It has limited accommodation, and a portaloo head, but fine if you can live with that. It provides shelter against our unreliable weather.

Being a single shaft, it was not the most maneuverable of boats, but we manged before upgrading to a Nimbus 335.
 
I have a 805 and I also chose it because of the shaft drive. It's very easy to maintain.
I was a bit scared of its manoevrability but was totally surprised ... positively. I must say that I fitted a bow thruster which is just great.

Welcome to the forum Jim.

Like you, I'm looking at buying, for me, early to mid next year, after years away from boating, so have recently joined here.

I have found this forum great for info and banter, with lots of input to questions.

The 705 is an OK boat. They are built to a price that makes them affordable and attractive, and for that they should be commended. They are not, however, anywhere near the best in terms of build quality or seakeeping. Unfortunately you will need to pay more for those if you want them. As a boat to use in gentle conditions with the family, I think you will find it more than adequate.

If I were in the market for a small pilot house boat in the MF705 style, I would be looking at Finnmaster and Parker. But that's just my humble opinion, so feel free to ignore it, I wont be offended. :)
