I couldn't see an 'Introduce yourself' forum so thought I'd jump right in and say hi. Apologies if that's not how it's done!!

I'm MacMan's SWMBO /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif though I guess he might have to change his username now we've bought a Prout cat.

I am in the process of making a new engine cover / cockpit table as Talia's finally rotted through at the hinges - the current one has thick insulation with a silvery backing that I've not seen before.

Does anyone know where I can get some replacement insulation? I've had a go at peeling the existing stuff off the old cover but it's starting to disintegrate so I suspect the glue and the reflective material are pretty much all that's still holding it together after 19 years service.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum. Jumping straight in is good!
Are you sure that the silvery stuff with attached foam isn't sound insulation if it's sitting on an engine cover?

....on second sight that looks a bit silly. You know it's sound insulation!
I've got it in the past from marine engineers and I've seen it on various chandlery websites. There have been ads in the back of PBOs in the past (not sure about now though). It's not cheap!

Both those suppliers stock it but ASAP do mail order. I haven't bothered on mine as I found it made very little difference to the noise level. Its the GRP bits that reverberate. Take the stuff off the existing one and try it without before you go to the expense. It might make a difference for you, it might not. Certainly much more important is a proper seal around the edges. You only need a tiny gap and the noise will be exessive.

Hi and welcome!
You can get sound insulation from Halyard Marine: www.halyard.eu.com

Thanks John but I can't get the link to work. Tried using Google and it finds the same link but I still get a 404 message when I try to open the page. Will try it later in case it's a temporary glitch

...but you will find these people cheaper!

What do they call it on ASAP? I've tried searching under Sound / Insulation / Noise and get nil returns on all my searches. I managed to find the right stuff via Google as sound absorber foam laminate but ASAP doesn't like any of those words either!

get stuff with a heavy layer sandwiched in foam, (lead or whatever), and make sure the box is SEALED. This is a pet subject of mine and you might be able to find some of my previous rants, for example:

Thanks for that! The foam itself is what is currently making the seal - the cover is 4-ply plywood board and the foam is a raised patch on the back that snugly fits into the GRP hole. I will have a play around but it may be that fitting some more vibration insulation around other areas may help too (there is a rear engine hatch cover outside the cockpit).

its the most useless site i have ever used, it only works wellif you have a copy of the catalogue and can put in the cat numbers for the prices.
