I eventually got round to fitting the hella regulator to my new engine this weekend(Yanmar with standard 55amp Hitachi alternator), the problem being that the instructions state that there should be two wires (red and black) to attach to the batteries to sense the battery voltage and temperature, my regulator has a red wire and a white wire so I naturally assume that red +ve, white -ve. If I attach the wires to the battery the alternator stops charging but if I remove the white wire it seems to work as it should.
I know it's a long shot but does anyone know if running it like this is likely to cause any problems?

I'm no expert an electrics, but the white wire may be part of the electronic trickery that senses the state of charge on your battery(s). It could be that your battery is fully charged and your regulator is doing its job.
Hey, it's a long shot, don't quote me...

I'd be glad if you would let me know how Hella Regulator improved battery charging performance. Am seriously considering fitting some type of regulator.
Thanks in advance.
