Has anyone on this forum got one of these very popular classic yachts besides Ribrage and myself?

Ocean-going steel ketch 44 feet, Peter Ibold design. As far as I know, not many built, possibly only 11 in steel.

I know of one in Port Napoleon, France (Scorpionne II, Swiss Flagged) which has probably just been sold and one in British Columbia (Parallel Dreams) and one somewhere in Turkey?

The Endurance versions was Fibre-Glass or Ferro at 37 or 44 feet, the Hedoniste was steel only (at 44 feet).

Any others?? :)

Hi David,
I am pleased to see your posting re the Endurance 44. I have been doing a minor refit on a round bilge steel version (Hedoniste. 1994) for about 6 months. I was considering putting it into a syndicate ownership arrangement but That might complicate life too much. Pity to not keep her in the fold but I'll be putting her on the market once the canvass maker has fitted the new dodger etc.
If you know of any one that may be interested in buying an excellent blue water yacht with all the gear, I'd love to hear from them.
Cheers
Iain

Hello Iain - Welcome to the forum and thanks for the post.

" . . . . . And the there were five!" :D

When I bought her in May, I has a message from a guy in Australia saying he had been trying to purchase "Surabaya Girl" and trying to work out how to ship it down under to Australia!!

I was wondering if it was you? You will have to tell me more about your ketch, name, call-sign, MMSI number and port of registration. :)

The steel version is the Hedoniste and the fibreglass version is the Endurance. Yours must be a Hedoniste 44. You can't sell her!!

I think I will have to start a club only open to Hedoniste owners? :D

If you PM me an email address, I will send photographs of Surabaya Girl.

Stay in touch. :)

Hedoniste

Hi David,
Thanks for your prompt response and great to hear of your enthusiasm for the design. I was not the enquiry from Australia in May.
My situation is that I run a small yacht charter and sail training company here in Ballina Australia (Baysail Pty Ltd) I operate a Van de Stadt 40 (also steel). The Hedoniste "Grace" cannot be used commercially the way Australian maritime surveys are structured. So having done the necessary work to make her beautiful again I need to sell her. I can certainly see why it is a popular design. Comfortable, Manouvreable, and seakindly.
"Grace" is set up as a cutter with in mast furling, 82hp Perkins, full spec drawings of all systems and was lovingly fitted out locally by a well resourced owner(that always helps).
Originally the hull was proffessionally built by Dahlenbeg Marine Date unknown.
The owner I bought her from, bought the hull and shipped the hull and deck to here and spent 3 years full time fitting her out with trade support.
She was lauched in 1994.
My email is info@baysail.net.au be great to hear of your experiences with "Surabaya Girl".
Cheers
Iain

Thanks for the reply. I did look on your web-site and looked at the photos of Island Lady and thought that the interior pictures looked uncommonly like a Hedoniste?

I could not find "Grace" on the ITU register which is surprising? All vessels are legally required to be on that register if they carry any form of transmitter (VHF, Radar, AIS 'B', EPIRB, PLB, MF/HF etc) . . . . ho-hum? :)

I will send some photos of my ketch to your email address. :)

I thought I saw one in Guernsey for sale about a year ago ?

Thanks for that, I hope to find a few more in the near future. It is only a question of plugging away and hoping for replies. I will note the one you saw and hopefully I will find it? ;)

There aren't many in the world as I was told that there were only 11 built of steel from the late 70's until the early 80's. :)

Thanks for that, yes another Hedoniste (not an Endurance). :)

That is the Swiss flagged ketch called Scorpionne II laying Port Napoleon. She was build number 8. I am hoping I can find out more about her sometime. :)

Thanks again and stay warm (North York moors and sheep)? I had a farm in central Wales so I know the problems this weather feeding sheep!

Here is a copy of the Builder's catalogue from 1977 - in the accompanying letter they mention that the basic price for a ketch rig with a full teak laid deck was GBP 67,600, and the delivery time would be approximately one year from commencement of work.

I remember seeing a Hedoniste 44 here in Carlisle Bay the following winter - she had probably just arrived from the Canaries. I think her name was Spirit of Sarnia, but am not sure.

Hello Pat and welcome to the YBW forums. I am sorry I have not been in touch recently but I have been working doing three yacht deliveries in recent weeks which has taken up a lot of my time.

Glad to see you have purchased "Scorpionne II" [call-sign HBY3093 ]. The steel version is a Hedoniste 44 and the ferro and GRP versions were called the Endurance 44 (or Endurance 37).

I believe your Hedoniste 44 yacht is Build No 8.. They are all finished internally to different styles depending on the original purchaser.

I have some details which came with my yacht and we can possibly get together sometime when I get down to the Mediterranean?

Where are you based? I have possibly the only list of the Hedoniste 44 on my laptop

Hi there,

I own a 44" Hedoniste too. In steel. Holland. I always thought that it was an Endurance! The boat is being fully restored at the moment. It will be the most beautiful Hedoniste in the world, haha. The original building drawings are there too.
If you want communication about it or some pictures, just mail toine@z21.nl

Hoping to hear from someone!

Hello Toine - Welcome to the YBW Forums.

As I said in a previous message above, I started to collect a list of all the Hedoniste 44's in the World and have a list of about 8 existing yachts.

They are very sought after and not often seen for sale anywhere.

You can write to me privately if you would like to chat further :)

Best wishes and I would love to see how the interior is set out onboard your wonderful ketch. Of course it will not be a nice as my ketch! :D

hey David,

Just give me your e-mail address (or anyone else too) and I will send you some pictures of the ongoing project. It will be a Hedoniste with a classical mahogony exterior. Nothing like the original but very classy and 'different'.

Best regards,
Toine

David, I have just read this thread and I remembered seeing one for sale yesterday! I have tracked her down on Apollo Duck.

Hello Paul - Thanks for the information, I was not aware of this ketch.

She is called "Friars Goose" and I am not sure if she is laying at Levington or Burnham on Crouch.

I have been told that only about 11 of these Hedoniste 44's were ever built so it will not be a big list. :)

Just like the first Rolls Royce cars that were ever built, where you bought the rolling-chassis and took it to be fitted out at a coach-builder and upholsters, the Hedoniste are finished as a rolled steel hull and fitted out to the specification of the new owner. So far, I have not found any photographs which show that the Hedoniste 44 is 'massed produced'. They all have a totally different built, inside. :)

Thanks again, still looking for Hedoniste 44's.
