Heater (Eberspacher) behaving oddly... and we\'re in for a chilly night

Our Eberspacher DL4 is behaving oddly: it fires up as normal, but after about an half an hour it quite rapidly turns itself off. By this I mean that normally when the cabin temperature reaches the desired level, it gradually slows down to a lower heat output, but now it just turns itself off in a period of less than a minute.

When I start it up again, it fires up just as normal, but then after a while the same thing happens again. And it's to that warm in the cabin yet.

We are on shore power so it's not voltage, and as it starts ok, I'm assuming the fuel shouldn't be a problem either. All the ducting seems to be fine.

Has anyone else had similar oddities from their heaters?

After almost tropical weather last weekend, we're back to normal weather conditions, and are expecting sub zero temperatures for the night. I'm getting slightly worried that we are going to need all the blankets we have. And more importantly, if things come to that, I'll be hearing about it from my mother-in-law for a long time.

Had something similar to this where it ended up being too much backpressure was causing overheating? at the outlet of the actual heater, causing it to close down. Opening all the vents may help this.

Another cause could be that the tiny fuel filter in the fuel pump is blocked, causing mildly warm air to be blown for a period before shutting down. Could be as simple as just cleaning the gunge out of that if this is the culprit.

After spending thousands on the Eber and £500 on the Webasco so far. (Two years old). I've resorted to the 15 quid, twenty year old van heater, reserving the Webasco for emergencies only /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

I was thinking about that. I've now fully opened all the vents and moved telly away from below the thermostat (hasn't been a problem before).

Seems to be running fine at the mo. Hope it lasts.

And now it bl@@dy stopped again!!!

It's getting a bit irritating /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

We're still here. I had to restart it once during the night.

Our batteries are busted to a point where using the electric loo dims the light even when we are on shore power. My thought was that sudden drop in voltage would initiate a power save mode or something.

Must have the batteries replaced asap.

Ebers shut down when voltage/batterry charge drops below a certain limit. All their instructions say you must have good fully charged batteries. Maybe that was your problem then?

Has the heater been serviced? Red diesel is not so good for these things, not that there is any alternative.

I had the same and the local dealer came out, a lorry specialist from Erith, and for reasonable money did the whole thing including spares.

Ours did this a lot, and it turned out to be a slightly knackered fuel pump plus a dodgy installation. New pump (£50 off eBay) and reinstalled fuel lines (all uphill, no loops to trap air bubbles) and it's fine.
