I took the heat exchanger off the right hand engine on Silver Dragon today, because the pressure cap and fitting are missing. It has a plate on it that shows it was made in summer 1978, which agrees with the age of the boat. It was made by Bowman, and was fitted to a BMC 2.5 diesel.

The heat exchanger tubes are clean as a whistle, but the exhaust manifold ports were hugely (about 50%) blocked with carbon deposits. It seems that 30 years of slow cool running takes its toll! It reminded me of decoking a two-stroke!

It was dry soft carbon though, not at all oily.

This made me think it would be good to do the other one, but access to that area on the left hand engine is not good on the Birchwood 33.

Maybe when Rebellion is back from climbing in Wales and the National Sea Scout camp.

I am sure he would enjoy the learning opportunity!

Try running on one engine at higher revs to give the system a blow through. or as suggested give her a blat down to The Eye and back.
Lazy Days had a pair of BMC/Leyland 2.5s installed laid over and were real pain to work on plus spares were getting a problem, I cleaned out Heathrow trucks stock of gaskets.

Laid over! Now that would be a pain!

I got 2 manifold gaskets from Chertsey Meads Marine. Just waiting for the call from Feltham Radiators to say they have done the pressure cap fitting then the manifold can go back on.

Then , once that engine is up and running I will have another look at the Port engine.

Got the heat exchanger/manifold back from Feltham Radiators today.

Including a new pressure cap the bill came to £50+ Vat.

A lot cheaper than a new one!

:)

Back together and running well. Phew!

I also identified all the 12v feeds from the unlabelled switches at the helm to the fuseboxes.

Now I have a fighting chance of getting the bilge pump and the bilge blower working!
