I can understand why the lip of the heads pan should be at the waterline level, to avoid getting one's own back so to speak, but is there a problem with mounting the heads so the lip is above the waterline? Such as syphoning or the like?
'Other than headroom' while sitting. etc etc

look forward to remarks.

Wish I had a little ditty that comes up at end of post, but I've only got my name.

No reason at all why a toilet can't be mounted above the waterline. While there aren't many places to do that on a sailboat, it's quite common to find toilets WELL above waterline on large motoryachts.

Otoh, there's nothing wrong with the entire toilet being completely below the waterline, provided the necessary siphon breaks/loops are installed to prevent water outside the boat from finding its own level inside the boat...in fact, many are.

However, on a sailboat the waterline isn't constant...it changes with heeling. So a toilet that's above waterline while a boat's at rest or on one tack may not be on the other tack...so moving it up may not eliminate the need for loops and siphon breaks. Nor will it prevent water from being forced up a hose through an open seacock while underway.

Why are you considering moving yours up?

Our loo fills up sometimes when underway.... It always stops at the rim though, just have to keep an eye on it. It's a foreign make (Spainish I think - the loo that is) and probably seen better days. The pump leaks a bit. It will do till we can get a new one tho. Any particualr make better than any others please? Not electric tho. Can imagine the lecky going and not being able to pee! Nitemare!

Your two best choices for a replacement toilet at a reasonable price IMO are the Lavac or the Raritan PH II.

If the seacocks aren't in easily accessible locations to allow you to keep them closed except when using the toilet, you might want to consider installing shutoff valves b oth the intake and discharge lines that you can keep closed.

That's what the lee shrouds are for - loop your arms round them and pee over the side!

Don't try to windward though or you'll get your own back.

I have been told that a large percentage of male casualties recovered from the sea after a fatal MOB incident have their trouser files undone............. /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

Best keep those arms wrapped tightly around the shrouds!

That's largely an urban legend...which--as most urban legends do--has a kernel of truth behind it. There have been a few such victims...all of whom had been out alone in small open fishing boats in remote waters (lakes rivers, isolated coves), weren't wearing any kind of PFD, and had stood up to pee over the side...either overweighting that side, loosing their balance and falling in or being tossed over by a wake or wave. The amount of beer consumed has also been a factor. With no one around to hear any calls for help, they've drowned. However, to my knowledge there's never been such a case from any other type of vessel.

Ok...against my better judgment, I'll bite: who is (was?) Robert Maxwell?

Robert Maxwell was the archetypal 'tycoon', owning the Mirror Group of newspapers amongst other things. While alive he was known as 'the bouncing Czech' as a result of his dubious integrity.

He fell from the back of his exteremely large motor yacht while apparently having a pee during the night. The yacht's crew were not aware of it until the next morning. His body was recovered off the Canary Islands.

Immediately after his death it became apparent that he had stolen approximately £500 Million from his company's pension funds.

Nice chap, lots of conspiracy theories, but I recall that the autopsy found that, partly due to his obesity, he suffered from a 'post micturation' something or other, which causes fainting.

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.
