Heads up for Clacton and surrounding area this weekend

We're planning to be there with friends on board, it was an absolute blast last year. The wind forecast and tides are perrrrrrfect for a journey from the North, monstrous tides to whisk us both ways and a beam reach with sunshine. Even the dog's excited. The Vulcan performed most of its manoeuvres over the anchored yachts last year, fingers crossed for the howl again this year.

Looks like a date then :o
which day are you going

Yep, all booked for Friday, we'll have two RAF johnnies on board and a brown job who knows his planes, so much muttering of "curiously they put the reverse camber on the tail foil to add 7% more lift in a Mach 2 climb out". Planes is nice but the Vulcan is awesome.

Used to watch squadrons of them scramble from Wittering when I was based there, used to work at the bottom of the control tower so had a grandstand view. Nothing on the internet sounds even remotely as impressive as the well known howl, so if you can get some good video footage I'd appreciate it, as would the XH558 support team on their website and FB

I'll give it a go, though last years' video was over spoken by SWMBO screaming "HE'S OPENING HIS BOMB DOORS"

how much time should I allow and what is the trip like from bradwell towers to the air show area as I have not bean past east Mersea / Brightlingsea area as yet

Friday 23rd August 2013
High: 01.58
Low: 07.57
High: 14.15

Hi Paul, the tides are humongous this Friday/Saturday, you'll see up to 3 knots along the coast. In reality that means you'll need to arrive by 8am. It's a very simple trip along the coast but an early start if you're coming north.

The Vulcan is only there on the Friday.
I called the number on the airshow website... apparently the Red Arrows and Vulcan are 3pm < 4pm ish
Sadly you can't download a programme - they said they are not that high tech!! I then asked could she post me one and take the £4 payment over the phone. Sadly they arn't set up for that either!!

Does anyone know what time the Lanc is going over?

See you there

Ian and Sarah

We hope to get down this year. Presume the anchorage is easily identified once off Clacton?

Yes there were bouys last year along the beach to keep you away from the shore, which was also patrolled by officers in blue in their rib. The Vulcan came right over our heads last year and the sound was awesome! We will be there again on Friday :)

Friday it is we will be taking the last of the ebb and early flood down the Wallet to be in situ aroun 1200 so should see the Sea King in action. Amazing to think they will be out of service. Mate of mine pulled Richard Branson out of the Atlantic whilst serving with 824 Naval Air Squadron when his ballon ditched off Rockall. Will be a poignant reminder of the amazing service the crews and airframe have given us boaters, climbers and mountaineers.

They will be badly missed!

+1

Wonder if Prince William could follow in his dad's steps & lobby to keep them!

What sort of depths in the anchorage? I'm just wondering if I've got enough chain in the locker if the exclusion zone pushes out into the Wallet.

I'm trying to remember but I think we anchored in about 7m. We only have 35m of chain and we were well and truly OK, no need for us to use the rope.
