Heads and holding tanks - a different view?

We are getting to the point of refit that I have been putting off. The rebuild of the heads and shower. Currently we have no holding tank and the head also needs to be replaced.
I have been holding a candle for the Blakes Lavac for many years, But recently heard about a "Dry Composting Marine Head" Trade name "Air Head" or possibly "Natures Head", appear to be very similar products.
These do look and sound like the ideal head system. No pipes, no through the hull and no holding tanks. All in one system.

Has anyone used them or have one?

This just has to be a serious contender for innovative product of the decade.

Sounds OK in priciple, but the s**t must go somewhere to be held, and it must be emptied at sometime.

My first thoughts are:
Dry systems for land based use.
Wet systems for water based use.
If you don't have a 'large' requirment and don't want holes in the hull, then go for a Porta Potti

Hi - we looked at this some years ago (so tech has moved on) and at that time the Canadian sun-mar was the best choice. There has been some recent discussion on the ssca.org bulletin boards as well, so you could look there.

The issue for us was the power. You do need some minimal power to run fan/heating to enable the composting to happen, which is of course a constant drain. Also there didn't seem to be any way to install 'y' such that if you had to you could revert to a direct pump into the water. This is a bit like the water pump issue: you must have a manual way to get at freshwater, and you must have a manual way to use your heads!

For some versions you also need to carry big bags of compost material eg straw or (which seems to completely contradict their value!) peat. So there is a space and sourcing issue for that too.

Would be very interested if you find a good solution as we would like one in the long run.

If you get a roll of toilet tissue, look for the most expensive, cleanest boat, with a bride with ironed clothes and makeup n earings, roll a wad in your hand, walk the pontoon and dump the tissues overboard next to their head outlet. no woriies.

THEN ! Complain profusely. they will begger orf quick. blame them. Stink pots are also good fun for this ruse. If you add a few marathon bars they will probably be impounded. Works every time.

I'm at present looking into a composting unit made in Vietnam and fitted into mobile toilet units as used at sporting events and construction sites. The unit can be sited away fron the toilet pan, is powered by 12v DC, the effluent and flushing water is treated and then discharged.
The unit needs emptying every 50,000 uses and a new earth pack installed. At present I'm carrying out boat motion trials to see if the unit will work in a constantly moving boat. If the tests come out Ok I'll look into having different size units made up.

The unit size at present is 100cm W x 100cm D x 60cm H.
Connections are Toilet inlet, Water outlet, Air vent outlet and Suction outlet plus 12v supply. the unit is made from stainless steel.
