There are often threads about replacing headlining and an article in Feb's PBO. Rather than use foam backed headlining which presumably will need doing again in the future, are there any alternatives?

Just paint it, you can easily deal with all the leaks and other carp hidden behind the 'beautification'
If it bothers you whilst lying on your back, get a younger partner or an iPad.
I use thin ply, having established the shape with cardboard ( or similar ) templates.
Getting the shape right is easier than might seem, small painted wooden blocks need to be bonded to the deckhead first - chemical metal works very well for this.
So the pattern of screw positions needs to be thought out first.
My 22' boats' saloon has two ply panels with a longitudinal join in the centre covered by mahogany trim - this join / small gap is handy for light wiring.
I must say having just replaced these panels after about 20 years, positioning them is definitely a two person job and we were glad when it was over !
However the varnished ply looks good in a cosy way and I think it's easier and more reliable than foam backed vinyl.
I put polystyrene tiles and silver foil between ply and deckhead for insulation and a highly unscientific ' might as well ' hope to increase the radar signature.
This is the old headlining, best shot I could find but may give an idea.
In the section between bulkheads I have soft velour fabric - cinema seat material ! - glued straight to the deckhead, this fabric chosen as it's hard wearing and kind on heads.
In the forepeak there's carpet at the hull sides but the deckhead is just painted, all works well.
