Need to round largeness point, which is quiet at high water, otherwise has overfalls marked.

However, I can't get out of Douglas marina till 2 hours before hw, but have a tidal stream, plus easterly wind f4-5 coming into harbour. No way my shitty outboard can go against the stream, which means leaving at hw, to try and tack out and then use the se setting tidal streams to take me down to the point.

So realistically, will be 2-3 hrs after hw Liverpool, so will have 2.5 or 5 knots tide under me going round.

My question is, since it's wind with tide, does that make it a tenable proposition?

I presume you mean Langness?

Streams around there are south-going (actually more like SW) until after HW+5, so you shouldn't have a wind over tide situation, which is far better than the opposite. Langness is not to be trifled with, however, particularly in a vessel as small as yours. And with your small engine, you'll have no good refuge in a brisk easterly before the point.

If you're in Douglas Marina, why not pop into Manx Marine (the chandlers you can probably see) and ask them how it might be in the expected conditions. Helpful and knowledgeable people.

No doubt you'll have similar questions about Calf Sound or Chicken Rock. They'll surely have good guidance on that, too.

Langness is tricky inshore but much more benign if you give it a decent offing. In any case in a boat with no engine you don't want to be near the rocks close in. With the wind and tide with you you'll fly round and can nip in PSM.
 
It's very difficult to advise because it would depend on the OP's experience and perception of risk and discomfort and how well prepared the boat is In general I would say to anyone who I didn't know who asked me if a passage was OK, that if they aren't sure, don't go.

My first Sadler 25 had an outboard - so I know what you mean! I had to sail her, which was just fine if there was wind. If not, I had to have pretty flat water. The outboard was on a bracket on the port transom, so a bit of wind from starboard was OK. If it was from port the prop came out the water...
 
Forget to say, went round yesterday, left Douglas in a 5, dropped to a 4 and was almost an hr after hw, as had to hold for the hydrofoil to come in before I could get out.

Doddle in the end, went past at 8.8knts over the ground :) with reefed main. Was great! Slight sea state helped a lot I think.
 
Cheers Mac. Yes, but not for a few weeks. She is tucked up in the inner harbour, flying out tonight to go back to work for two weeks, then back at end of month. Will carry on round, then over to in and explore up there, then onto Islam and the west.
Got 2 weeks for next trip, then 3 weeks for the one after that.
