He said I was \'Fuzzy\'

Have fitted the new aerial and got a response from the club boatman on his handheld (CH37). So he could hear me OK.

Obviously the aerial works but any thoughts as to why the sound quality should be 'fuzzy'.

Something/Nothing to do with the aerial? Perhaps the microphone? What tests can I run?

Re: He said I was \'Fuzzy\'

Some of the cheaper mics are made with carbon granules. A little damp can 'fuse' them and cause poor response. A quick sharp knock often clears things - for a while.

Perhaps try calling someone on another set, preferably a fixed installation, just to ensure it isn't his duff hand held thats fuzzy.

If still fuzzy then either your mike or AF stages of radio.

So try another mike I guess.

If still fuzzy need to look inside radio. There will be a small variable resistor thats labelled "modulation level" or "audio level" or something similar, try tweaking that - turn it down first then up see if makes a difference.

If that fails its wireless repair man - or a new wireless.

This forum stuff really works!

Where else am I going to get feedback on this sort of thing on a Sunday evening!??

Great.

Re: He said I was \'Fuzzy\'

Not sure about "fuzy", but the swishy noise often heard is the result of people who don't know holding the microphone square to mouth, so air "blows" in as they speak. Microphone should be held at 90 dgrees to mouth so speech "crosses" face of mic. Usually results in crystal clear comms. Hate those TV shows where they shove the PTT up against the mouth and shout into it!

Re: He said I was \'Fuzzy\'

hello I might be wrong but I seriously doubt that carbon mics are used in handhelds. To my knowledge they disapeared in aircaft 25 years ago although in that case they stilll use a carbon microphone type circuit. ie small DC voltage on the audio wire. but that is for hand microphones. olewill
