Hc calculated position

After all the advice people have given here, I've been bidding for an ebay Ebbco. The auction was about to end a few minutes ago, when the vendor pulled the item! Shouldn't be allowed, ebay refuses to allow you to reduce your maximum amount (NOT the actual amount bid) on the grounds that you've made a binding contract. If a maximum (but unbidden) amount can't be retracted I should have thought the same sort of condition should apply to the vendor, unless there's a minimum bid required. There wasn't in this case.

That's genuinely annoying. On the positive side, Ebbco sextants pop up on eBay all the time so hopefully you'll get the next one.

As an aside to my earlier endorsement of cardboard sextants, google, making a sextant from a cd. Should appeal to all you practical boat owners out there to have a go. Some ingenious use of leggo bricks.

It is simply Neptunes way of saying don't buy the monkey.

The price of a cardboard sextant is very similar to what an EBBCO would cost on ebay, so after due consideration, no contest really. Plus I can take an EBBCO to sea with me. I hope that Neptune is satisfied.

Just looked at the boxed sextant that a friend used for real over several trips. Ebbco. Looking forward to seeing how close I can get to the GPS. Never know, they might switch it off...

Does anyone know the size of the hex mirror key for an Ebbco special? I've just got hold of an old one, but (of course) it came without the adjustment key. Other than that it seems to be in quite reasonable condition.

Do enjoy southern Poland.

Received wisdom during RAF Navigator Course in early 70s was that "If you can plot your first dozen Astro Intercepts somewhere actually on the en-route chart you're flying with ( 1: 3,000,000 North Atlantic and British Isles ), then you're doing well. We can work on improvements....."

From memory it’s just a small allen key. Just get a set and try them until you find the one that fits.

Can I win the prize for the cheapest sextant? The Ebco Special I used for years (and passed my YMO with) was bought for £5.00 in a jumble sale. I bought a ‘proper brass’ sextant off eBay years later.

Whilst we are talking about sextant and their use at sea. Could I ask how you all managed to do the practical side of the
RYA Ocean Nav Cert.
The passage has to be a minimum 600nm length conducted offshore.
My sea time is more than 10 years ago and the RYA will not allow any passages made over 10 years ago.
I’m not sure if the the theory also has a life limit but I only did that a few years ago for my own interest.
It would be nice to complete the practical side if it could be done at a reasonable cost and time.

fortuna aliud cogitat?

Fortune has cogitated nicely for me. I have just bought an Ebbco with -wait for it- GOOD SHADES! Apart from 1 yellow one which seems to be dissolving.
And to answer my own question regarding the size of Allen Key needed to adjust an Ebbco, 1.3mm fits the bill.
