Thought it worth highlighting the following...

http://www.yachtingmonthly.com/news/536805/yacht-rescue-service-facing-cash-crisis

A little over 4 years ago I was dis-masted just off HISC in the harbour entrance, and it these guys that turned up and saved my day - I tried to track them down afterwards, unsuccessfully, so I was more than happy to spend a tenner on the book... if you feel the same way it seems like a good way of ensuring a splendid service continues??

Ever since I realised that there are non-RNLI lifeboats, I've tended to make any donations to them rather than the RNLI. Not because I have anything against the national charity, but because the small outfits are generally much more short of cash, and find it harder to raise funds due to their smaller size, lower profile, and tendency to be confused with the RNLI. The last couple of times have been to GAFIRS and to Hamble Lifeboat, who are trying to build a new boathouse they can actually fit their boat into without dismantling it.

200 rescues a year by one chap!!!!!!! 24/7 - amazing.

He's far too modest if he allows a 'yachtsman' to think he is RNLI and walk away after a rescue. Even the RNLI are a charity and I don't believe receive anything from the treasury. I'd like a list of these yachtsmen/women who are so not grateful as to make even a modest contribution to say thank you.

Bit like Gosport and Fareham rescue. http://www.gafirs.org.uk/. Independent.

Yes, I was out on a friends new Mobo a few years back when the engine overheated, and started a small fire, which as we found later melted the water intake hose so that it started taking on water. The onboard bilge pumps held it, just. Hayling Rescue was first on the scene and quickly deployed a large pump, which enabled us to find the damaged hose and shut off the seacock. He was closely followed by Hayling RNLI. And the Helo, which didnt please my friend too much! Fortunately the damage was not severe, and the IRB towed us back to base. As far as I could see he is a one man self funded Rescue service, and does a great job. I have seen him round the harbour on several occasions since.

Hadn't heard about the book, but a very competent guy totally committed to his Rescue service, but I did and still do wonder how it is all paid for.

can we not just make a donation without buying a book? Then Amazon don't get a cut?!

A truly wonderful man. He is now in financial difficulties maintaining and running his boat. If you would like to contribute to Hayling Rescue repair costs please leave a cheque with Hayling Island Sailing Club office, or pay a BACS donation directly into The Friends of Hayling Rescue bank account No 03342387 Sort code 20-69-34 with your surname as reference. All contributions gratefully accepted.

I agree. My local lifeboat is the Nith Inshore Rescue boat, who are good people and always strapped fr cash. It's not at all an insult to the RNLI (though I wish they would not call themselves "the charity which saves lives at sea") to say that the independents deserve our support too.

That's the important point. Last time I said that I tend to donate to independents, a couple of people thought I had some sort of chip on my shoulder with the RNLI.

What about using a crowd source fundraising platform such as justgiving or crowdfunder.co.uk? I mentioned this on YMs facebook page but there was little response.

Good idea, but the chap himself should be the one doing it and no idea what that would mean for tax. He'd get a good platform here to advertise.

Has he not got a website?
