Haydn, hlb

Sad news indeed. RIP.

Regarding the lost thread, if anyone is able to recall an approximate date when it was present then it may be possible to find it here:

Otherwise known as the Wayback machine it has snapshots of the forum going back to late 2001.

Good idea, but looked there before. Wayback Machine didn't crawl deep enough back then. You can find all Haydn's posts (sort by poster to make quicker), but can't see the content :( e.g.: https://web.archive.org/web/2003101...t=&Board=mby&page=20&view=collapsed&sb=3&o=93 When you click on the posts, there's sadly no archived content. A couple of stories have been reposted over in the Lounge thread, but not the elusive exploding bog! :(

Edit: I did find this in YBW archive: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?169873-Mucky-Farter-Strikes-Again

Thank you. That thread has a number of interesting posts, of which this is an example:
Oh, excellent! So it's not just me, then.

We were in Dartmouth a few years ago rafted up alongside Alastair and as I pumped the heads, SWMBO commented that there was an awful stink outside. We had been invaded by kids earlier that day, and 5 boat loads had decided to use our heads, filling the holding tank. Every time I pushed the pump handle, a jet of crap was forced out of the breather hole which was unfortunately just level with Alastair's side deck. Fortunately he was in town at the time and we managed to hose his boat down before he got back. I'm not sure we actually fessed up at the time.

Anyway, the nice folks at the marina told me the pump out was knackered and the nearest one was in Plymouth, so we went out to sea to pump out. That was when we discovered the macerator was also knackered. Anyway, the tank was bulging ominously and stank, so we decided that the best thing to do was push as much seawater in as we could to dilute the contents.

SWMBO motored around in slow circles for 45 minutes while I got a good workout on the bog handle. For anyone interested, a good hard push on the handle can throw a solid jet of sh*te anything up to 8 feet horizontally from the breather hole. Truly impressive, but not too fragrant.

The following day involved fitting a new macerator pump in 30* heat, with a still bulging tank. Now you just know what happens when you undo the hose clips on the macerator...
...and Haydn's response:
Ah. A man after my own heart, removing the maserator pump can be an uplifting experience.

I'm going to have to be more observant at the holding tank ejection ceremonys in future.

So sad as along time member of the forum I enjoyed his stories so much and also the christmas panto! I once saw him on his boat in Poole . RIP mate!

Sad but sorry to say not really unexpected.

You may or may not know he'd been suffering from various cancers and other illnesses for a while but insisted on still smoking. He said what's the point stopping now. Leastways I think that's what he said in his thick Lancashire accent.

Like many here I met him first at one of Matt's parties in what 2000 would it have been? IIRC he was with his first wife before divorcing her and marrying Debs a couple of years later. He spent the whole evening out on the balcony smoking and drinking scotch. He was staying at a nearby hotel and never could remember how he got back to it or even if he did.

At that time, before the Lounge existed and before we really had a proper forum, we used to use our own names to post with then Kim Hollamby (Haydn was convinced Kim was a woman, or maybe a trannie) came up with this rule that we all had to have a unique forum name. Haydn couldn't think of a forum name so Matt came up with the suggestion that he use his car registration number, hence the HLB. I teased him that it really stood for High Level Brakelight and that ran for a few threads.

I plead credit for the invention of his boat's nickname, Mucky Farter a contraction of it's real name Meekatharra as Brendan said. Which IIRC is an Australian town meaning "place of little water" strange choice of name for a boat but where Haydn got it from I couldn't say.

I last saw him October last year, I was in Manchester and phoned him and popped in and I have to say he was in a pretty bad way then. Confined to one small downstairs room in a large stone farmhouse and unable to care for himself, he had carers visit two/three times daily to help him. Some of you may have read his posts on the subject. He didn't really get on with his son and daughter but I hope he made his peace with them, since as he told us all he had quite a healthy bank balance and from one of his posts he said he wasn't leaving them anyhting. Hope he changed his mind.

He called me a couple of months ago and asked if I'd visit him again and tbh I told him OK, but could we have a window open to let the smoke out. I never did get round to the second visit but when I got home from my first visit my wife accused me of starting smoking again - his room was that bad.

However none of that is important, what is important is that the forum has lost one of the originals and one of the posters who helped make it what it is today.

He'll be sadly missed and stories like the exploding bog and the adventures of mole and ratty on the River Wissey along with the story of the Lancashire Treacle Mines will be missed too.

RIP Haydn, you'll be missed mate.

Anyone got funeral details?

RIP Haydn.

Like many on here first met him in the 'real world' at a Xmas/Boat Show Party . Loved his posting style and comedy but never understood a word he said in person apart from the cussing. Never realised that LJS hadn't understood much he said either until now.

When we met again some years later ( he was now with Debs) he was perplexed as how she and I could know one another so well. Truth was she & I had worked closely, but not together, for many years. He never seemed the same after she passed on.

Col, I too was at one of those parties (I think it was the first one and I vaguely remember not being invited to the second)! I have photos on my PC of many of you but sadly not Haydn. I guess I didn't venture out onto the cold balcony where it sounds like Haydn spent the evening.

Meekatharra is indeed an Australian gold mining town, my partners brother has actually worked there, it's a small world! His boat was called that when he bought it. He's got 2 sons and had problems with both of them, or more particularly with one son and his daughter in law. He certainly lived an interesting life, starting off iirc as a green grocer and a coal merchant, then moved on to long distance lorry driving to the Middle East and then setting up a plastic extrusion factory, whilst also managing his property portfolio.

But what stands out most of all was his love of boating, and in particular his boating exploits in the West country, which he loved. For some strange reason he seemed to enjoy having me along with him either on my own boat or staying with him on MuckyFarter.

A story he most enjoyed telling was of the day we went to the Pandora Inn up the Fal. When we got there, we were one of the first to arrive so parked MF straight on to the pubs pontoon. As the lunch time wore on we consumed a few beers and by the time we came to leave we found about 3 smaller boats rafted up against MF. Rather than go searching for the owners he decided that he was going to move the whole raft so the outside boat then was twisted round to be on the inside. So off he went and about a minute later, with MF now on the outside, with all 3 boats still tied in a raft against him, he positioned the raft perfectly for me to re-tie the raft but now in reverse order!! He could certainly handle that boat superbly.

On another occasion I remember turning up at Plymouth YH and walking down to MF to find Haydn busy in the lazarette plumbing in a 45 gallon oil drum which was to prove to be a very effective additional fuel tank. He was rightly very proud of his initiative in extending his effective cruising range!

Another memorable occasion was in Dartmouth when he decided that there must be a better way to clean his boat and inflatable without using expensive boat cleaning products. I guess from his lorry driving days he used traffic film remover, and at about £25 per 20 litres, it was certainly cheap. We first used it on MF, and it immediately changed the fibreglass to a bright yellow colour! To say he was concerned was an understatement but with much washing down the usual white gradually re-appeared, but boy, was this stuff effective, removed almost any type of dirt. But it was even more effective on inflatables, removing grime in an instance, unlike any other product I've ever used, so much so that Haydn decided that it need to be marketed to the forum. His "advert" consisted of me doing the cleaning whilst he took the photos. This was when the term, international boat remover, was born. I think he sold quite a bit of the stuff, not looking to make a profit, rather than share something effective with the forum that he so loved, especially in those early days. As evidenced by his forum burgee production and distribution.

I didn't see Haydn in the last few years of his life, geography, work, relationships etc getting in the way, but we did speak quite often on the phone. I know life was very difficult for him following Deborahs death some years ago.. Lots of people have said that he was never the same after that and hope they will now be together, rather surprisingly he told me that his relationship with her was not all it appeared to be. I have to say that I found her completely charming, very good company and always interested in others, so I guess living with Haydn had its ups and downs, he could be difficult!!

But overall he was good company, loved his scotch and fags, but most of all loved his boat. It broke his heart firstly having to re-locate MF to N Wales and then having to sell her when he could effectively no longer walk. After that, he effectively had nothing to live for and quickly lost interest in life and living. I have to say that dying will have come as a blessed relief for him, completely true in his case, so now is a time to look back and enjoy again so many of the good times we shared. And there were many that I will always treasure.

So sad to read this news. I too enjoyed the silly posts and the banter with the northern 'club'. Many a funny story or even a turn of phrase in repartee to some 'newbee' or generic muppet.

He was totally respected on here over the years for many lasting contributions which even now are still remembered as mentioned above.

I'm pretty sure that my forum budgie will be a lasting reminder of 'hlb' and hopefully for us all.

RIP Haydn.

Just seen the sad news. I missed it initially because I ignore the stickies which are several months out of date.

It's clear to see that when on form few of us would be able to hold a candle to the old boy.

Recently Haydn went through some difficult times. He and I crossed swords on more than one occasion. The sad thing is we probably had more in common than he would ever know.

Condolences to all who knew him.

Henry - the other one, not the dog !

Very sad news indeed.

I never met Haydn but he was a real character on the Mobo forum in its pre-Lounge heyday when I first joined and we 'spoke' on here several times. His stories were legendary and I missed his contributions over recent years, as he only popped in occasionally. He wasn't slow to criticise the loss of 'character' on the post-Lounge Mobo forum, a view that I happened to have some sympathy with.

May he rest in peace.

Mal has inherited Haydn's computer and has all his stories.

Although Mal is busy organising Haydn's funeral at the moment he has taken the time to upload the first four long yarns in a dedicated sub forum on notthelounge.com called Mucky Farters Adventures

Anyone got funeral details?

A couple things, firstly we do not yet have a date for the funeral, as soon as we have a confirmed date I shall post the details. Haydn's full name was Haydn Lee Bohen hence HLB, both on his car and his login on here, and as far as I know the chap Haydn bought Mucky Farter from had some connection with the Gold Mining town of Meekatharra.
I have not had chance to start searching his PC yet there has been so much to do, Haydn made me the executor of his will and so I am doing what I can, but this is not an easy task.
