Haydn, hlb

hlb was asked about this several times. The origianl was lost on the forum changeover, and he trawled through his computers but could not find the story. If the executors can be persuaded to let SK have the machines, it might be possible to find something.

Very sad to hear this. I also first met Haydn at one of tcm's parties in London for the mobo forum crowd back in the old days before the Lounge ever existed and it was just us and Scuttlebutt. Crikey was it really 20 yrs ago. He was a larger than life gruff Northerner character then and certainly some of his postings on the mobo forum were equally memorable involving as they usually did his trials and tribulations with his Princess motor boat, affectionately (at least I think it was affectionately!) known as Mucky Farter. I'm not sure we ever learnt its real name. Certainly his exploding bog thread was one of the absolute highlights and IMHO a nomination for all time best forum thread. Haydn also put a lot of time and effort into designing and having manufactured the mobo forum burgee, something which he didn't get enough credit for especially from some of the newbies that joined the forum in recent years who were rather too free with their criticisms of Haydn's efforts which I know upset him. I still fly his forum burgee on my boat and, as I am currently on my boat, tomorrow I will lower it to a half mast position as a mark of respect for the great man.

I'm also deeply sad to hear the news. Never met HLB but 'spoke' few times on here, a true character with a great sense of humour, not so many like him these days. RIP Haydn, sockit to 'em wherever you are!
 
Hearing of people that we never met passing away is something that happens on a daily basis.
And of course that's always sad news, whoever they are.
But for some of them, for some reason, my first thought is that I could and should have found a way to meet them, and sadly, such possibility is now lost forever.
RIP Haydn, I am sorry to have missed this opportunity.
 
I remember him as a keen boater doing long cruises and always enjoyed his funny videos and posts from those adventures.

Have a safe journey Haydn.

The only occasion we have met I think, funnily enough, I nearly wrote that I couldn't understand a word he said that weekend.
 
I am sorry to hear this. I never did meet him, but his no nonsense approach to boating taught me much in this era of endless health and safety.
I fondly remember a thread that was about a forumite planning a daring venture from the Solent to Plymouth, I think. After many had posted their cautionary advice, HLB's simple reply was along the lines of "come out of the marina and turn right".
Indeed.

Regarding the lost thread, if anyone is able to recall an approximate date when it was present then it may be possible to find it here:

Otherwise known as the Wayback machine it has snapshots of the forum going back to late 2001.
