Hawk or Windex?

I prefer the windex based on very little, just prefer to leave VHF to its intended purpose. They are both pretty good, if you need a new VHF then probably vtronix hawk is more suitable. If your VHF is fine then windex is prob better. bavaria seem to get hold of some really nice stainless steel wind indicators, if you could get hold of one (never seen them in this country) that would be best.

If you can they are usually best situated right at the back of the masthead.

Dont forget there is a Hawk and a Great Hawk as well as the V-Tronix Hawk.

Maybe the bearing for the Hawk and Great Hawk is better than that in the V-tronix version

Mine is a Great Hawk.
Only one screw to undo to remove the whole assembly from its mounting to store safely for the winter.

I've got the smaller Windex (9"?), separate VHF aerial. That's on a Vega with 30' mast so would also be fine for yours I'd have thought...

Windex

I have made my own of recent times because they do come to grief with birds attacking them and they are so expensive. The post is a piece of 3 mm SS wire clamped to the side of the mast by 2 clamps.
The indicator is made from carbon fibre cloth laid up on a flat surface. fibreglass may be OK. The fin itself is one layer of cloth, while the shaft has several layers about 1cm wide. In between these layers I plant a piece of stainless steel tubing with a hole slightly larger than the shaft.Once hard I turn it over and lay up more cloth strips on the other side to leave the ss tube in the middle of the shaft. Trim the shaft shorter or add lead to make it balance when laid sideways. Paint it if you used epoxy.
I use 2 tubes from chocolate block electrical connectors with 2 screws clamping the tube. One goes above the pointer one below. I don't have guide markers as I find just the pointer is fine. Mostly used for judging an impending gybe. The beauty being you can make as big as you like. Mine is about 30cms long. olewill
