Some theiving s*d has pinched the top gubbings off my
Hawk VHF antenna. (or it fell o/b) As I dont fancy paying
£50 for a plastic strip and tuppence worth SSteel -wonder if anyone knows the diameters and lenghts
of the remaining stubby bit so I can make my own
gubbings without sending the missus up the stick
more than once

Hi Cameocrew!

I would think two or three times about trying to effect a repair, especially at the top of the mast, if the 'bit' that has gone missing is the stainless aerial section itself. Some years ago mine started suffering badly from corrosion where the s/s whip entered the aluminium section caryying the hawk stuff.

I happily cut through the ali, aiming to remove the corroded section, clean up the stub and re-seat the Hawk bits, only to discover that the s/s whip is 'clamped or cast' into the aluminium and only extends some 30-40mm into it!!

Whoops!! Two bits of aerial and no permanent way to join them. tried drilling and hammering in, epoxy gluing etc, but nothing worked so...... out a bought a new one!!

However!! If it's just the plastic Hawk bits that have jumped ship, I'd suggest contacting the manufacturers and buying those only, as I believe they are available separately in a sort of kit form.

Hope this helps.

Good sailing!

Give it a go!

Thanks to all for advice. The s*d who half hitched the gubbings must have found
it v.easy to remove- as a stainless steel whip abutted into Alum. stub is a v.v. very poor
design for maritime use-unless they were insulated from each other (then the antenna would not work) I guess a different manufacturer is called for so the
missus has only one trip up the pole.
