Haven Ports Yacht Club - worth it?

I dont have to be any yacht club member to go into the Shipwreck at Shotleyy but you will have to eventuly become club yacht member to go in the Lightship at Levington and at some cost .....

If i was a prospective member and I am not intrested in yacht racing in a club that cruising is second string then what am I getting for my money .

Nothing againts Ivan and the team at Lightship ... top block and a friend
I agree.

I was a berth-holder for 11 years at SYH - no incentive to join HPYC.

Might have paid for a restricted 'social membership' (ie just drink & food) with no joining fee - too expensive otherwise.

I wasn't interested in racing or club cruising in company.

I'm sure PeterWright knows why they won't/can't offer that (a restricted 'social membership' ) - seems a bit daft to me.

All good points raised so far. It is indeed my understanding that boats based at SYH cannot be 'visiting yachtsmen' and that therefore my only options are to join or go elsewhere. I don't live on the East Coast, so most of my sailing will be at weekends. At present the boat is at Ipswich. I've got used to the advantages of being able to pitch up at the boat on a Friday night and have a convivial drink without having to drive or face a 40 min walk. Thus, if I want to be able to do the same at SYH I may have to join regardless. However, as I don't have the time or inclination to go racing I wanted to know what else, other than a bar and restaurant, I would get out of HPYC before springing the cash. From their website they do seem to do a fair few weekend 'cruises in company' and this I think would be enough to get me to join, as I only moved the boat to the East Coast from West Wales last July so my knowledge of the area is reasonably limited.

Was also a past bertholder at SYC.... great place the Lightship good people ... for me it was the yacht club membership costs and what they provided that initially convinced me to move to Shotley.

I feel more wanted and looked after at Shotley marina end of day glad I made the move.. good luck to you and all the best for this season.

I was all set to sign up but it appears I need a proposer and seconder for my application to be considered. I guess I need to wait for the boat to arrive and make some friends at SYH quickly if I want to buy a burger or a beer! ;) I've paid for the berth (A3) for the year so just need the boat now.

Having looked at their application form, it does say if you are new to the area a flag officer and committee member will act as the proposer and seconder - you just need to tell them that when you send in the application I think.

I also live in Milton Keynes ... hanslope.

If you see Ivan the manager in the Lightship he will give you the contacts for proposer & seconder

Why not move to Shotley ?

Closer to the sea than SYH, pub in the marina and one a few minutes walk away, Another good pub in the village if you fancy a meal somewhere different. Chinese takeaway, Indian takeaway, Pizzas and fish and chips just up the road. Butt and Oyster in Pin Mill, a few minutes drive. Foxs is just a 15 minute drive.

SYH & HPYC are 2 different entities, just because you pave paid for a berth on an annual basis, does not give you club access

Yes, I was aware they were separate but I had thought that having paid for five nights/four days I would be afforded power til the next morning on my departure.
To actually cut me off within five minutes of paying was less than acceptable.

Hi, I'm really sorry to hear that. I can be reasonably confident we weren't trying to get rid of you ;)

Just so you are aware how the system works and by means of explanation; Generally our electricity system for visitors works on a timer basis (although it can be overridden), we will switch it on when the visitor books in if power is requested for the required no. of nights. So we don't forget to turn it off again (as invariably there is a change over of staff and these things can get 'overlooked') it is set to take care of that for us. As such I can only assume it was an unfortunate case of timing with no malice intended. If it had been switched off manually then again I assume it was because the duty Berthing Master was under the (incorrect) belief you had already left...we would have had no reason to do otherwise.

I realise it's like the proverbial stable door now, but please rest assured that we would have been more than happy to re instate it if it had been brought to our attention until your actual departure.

Best regards

Bob

Because I've just arranged to move to SYH this year and paid for my berth from April :-). Can always think of other options for next year if I don't like it

I've never been on the Committee of HPYC - just an ordinary member, as I have been of several other yacht clubs before, so I don't know why there is no social membership class. If asked to hazard a guess, I would say that the facilities in the lightship are stretched to the limit on summer weekends and introducing a social membership class would attract a lot of non sailors from the local area, putting further strain on those facilities. As it is, the club makes extensive use of SYH's Harbour Room and the associated marquee, across the road from LV87, on regatta weekends. But that's just a guess, if you want to know the reason, ask one of the club Committee.

Peter.

Dont SYH own LV 87 & lease it to HPYC

Join the Rya , biggest club there is and just sign in as a visitor .

To be honest I don't like Hpyc after being on the receiving end of the "stuffiness" so wouldn't bother stopping there now ..

Like Sailorman, I'm a long standing member of the RYA, and an earlier post of mine makes it clear that this would not provide a solution for the OP. I'm also aware that the RYA encourages it's members to join their local sailing club.

Like others who've posted here, I've never encountered stuffiness at HPYC, it's a friendly welcoming group of people. Because we value our licence, we do encourage visitors to introduce themselves at the bar and sign the visitors book, but that is not stuffiness, merely complying with the terms of our licence.

Peter

The hospitality at hpyc is very good but to enjoy that long term one would have to become a full member in the original ops case a family membership. If I am not intrested in club racing or cruising thats a lot of mony for drinks and food ... but respect fellow sailors have a choice.

Yes the RYA promote its members to join local sailing clubs .. sorry RYA registered sailing clubs. Present day the RYA are also concerned about the related cost's in running such sailing clubs and how that cost ultimately impacts on its members. It fundamentally comes down to what you pay and what you get back in return thats the individuals choice to weigh up VFM

Well, I've decided to join with family membership for a year and see how much I actually use it. Being relatively new to the area the cruises in company hold some appeal, as does the prospect of beer and food near the boat, but if at the end of the year I find it isn't worth the candle I can always think again next year. That you all for your input!

The incident was back in the mid 90's so maybe things/ people have changed , I can only hope so .

Ive been a rya member for many years but don't belong to any one club as I can't see what they could offer me , I don't race anymore and don't need a club to "cruise in company" as most of ecf socials are outside of a club anyway .

As for eating/drinking I'd rather head for a pub / restaurant in the nearest town , which therefore rules out SyH
