Have you taken an RYA course in Falmouth?

Hi!

I sent my old style Day skipper certificate back to the RYA a few years ago to exchange it for the new style one with a photo and either it didn't come back or when it did I put it in that special safe place that we all have but can never find again - now I need it.
I have spoken to the RYA today (Very helpful indeed!) and they have sent me a form to fill out to request a replacement along with a cheque to cover the cost - which is fine with me but on the form it asks for the name of the sailing school and here's the problem. I did the Course in the summer of 2001 in Falmouth, it was five full days plus Saturday evening/night drifting around Falmouth. The yacht was a westerly and I think the chap was called Ken but I'm stuffed if I can remember the company name. I've asked the bank for copies of my 2001 statements as I'm pretty sure I paid by cheque so I 'should' be able to get the name... But from the limited info does anyone recognise which school it was?

Possibly Cornish Cruising? I did my Dazed Kipper with them in a Westerly out of Falmouth Marina at about that time.

Thanks Pete, I thought it might have been. I've just given them a ring to see if they have records going back that far. Fingers crossed!

If the RYA are willing to re-issue your certificate, does it matter if the school have records or not?

As you have to fill in a form telling them where and when you took the course I assume they will check with the sailing school that you actually completed the course otherwise anyone could get themselves a certificate. I also assume that if they can't find record of me ever taking the course they won't issue me a certificate. Which whilst it would be a nightmare for me can only be a good thing.

My logbook says that if you lose your certificates, you should apply to the school for a replacement, not the RYA centrally. I was assuming that the RYA headquarters form was for the case where the school no longer had any records. Neither would the RYA of course (in those days they didn't keep any, the certificates were filled in by hand in the schools and that was that) but I thought perhaps they would just assess whether the info on the form was plausible and then dish out the cert. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

The lower-level course-completion certs are not valuable enough to need impenetrable anti-fraud protection IMHO.
