Have you made an idiot\'s guide?

I was just about to use Powerpoint (I'm off work, but still need a fix every day) to make a series of reminder sheets I would laminate - you know the ones next to the VHF for panic calls, the tide diagrams for the Solent, reminders of useful acronyms (if they're that good, why do I need a reminder?).

Then I thought with all of the anal sailing computer experts on the forum, it will have been done several times before and I could beg or borrow rather than create from scratch.

I'll volunteer to combine them, if more than one, and then share.

So is there anyone with a) a starter for ten you did for yourself or b) ideas on what should be in the Idiot's Guide?

There is an e-mail address in my profile.

Happy Xmas /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Have you made an idiot\'s guide?

Tea towels is wot you need. I have one each for knots, flags, sea areas, rules of the road etc.
New crew do seem a bit bemused (nervous even) when I hand over the wheel to consult the tea towel.
(name and address suplied)

Ta. Will take a look at the "Cockpit Guide" (sounds like something to get at LIBS), add some knots, compile with powerpoint and print on tea towels.

Hi,
I borrowed my dad's laminater and did a few maps etc. before Christmas.

it's obligatory to have the SOLAS life saving instructions on board so I printed from the link below and printed/laminated for keeping onboard:

The other one I would add is simple mayday/PANPAN etc instructions for keeping next to the VHF.

Cheers

P.S. would love a set of the tea towels

Re: Have you made an idiot\'s guide?

Keeping the crew calm is essential. Nothing can alarm them more than the skipper looking at the instruction mode.
A quick suruptitious glance at a well placed tea towel is just the thing!!
On the serious side I know that I would not pass the yachtsmaster theory course if I had to do it tomorrow. I can only remember those bits which have become 'embedded' from practical use.
I do have my rules of the road and various pbo guides where I can get my hands on them!!

Re: Have you made an idiot\'s guide?

I tried tea towels as you suggested but it made a complete mess of my laminator! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Have you made an idiot\'s guide?

I made up a laminated Idiot's Guide for making a MAYDAY call. It even has photo's of the VHF and GPS showing which button to press and where to read the position from. Obviously, this couldn't be of any use to anyone else unless you have a Sealine II VHF and a Garmin GPSMAP130 ! Nevertheless, I found crew and passengers were always confident that they could call for help if necessary. Now all I need is one to show them how to drop the sails and switch the engine on ...
